Default Grinding during shift.

Hello,

Having a problem where the gears will grind when I skip a gear from 4-6. This only happens during decent acceleration and past 3500-4000 rpm. I rarely do this so its not a big issue, but if something is wrong I want it fixed. I was passing a truck last night and after passing I went to put it in 6th.

When I try to shift into 6th there's a horrible grinding noise and the lever won't go into place, albeit I haven't tried to force it in there really hard. Also, at times, when the shifter is in first and I give it gas the thing pops into neutral. I'll have to push in the clutch pedal again and engage first again. The shifter will pop into neutral before the car gets going which leads to a loud grinding sound. Has only happened a few times, but enough times to have me really worried.

Any thoughts?

sounds to me like you have bad teeth on that particular synchro ring. I have experience in that particular problem. Hope that's not it though, because if it is, the only way to correct is to replace that part, or regrind the teeth on it. Expensive and laborious either way. :nonod:

Very cheap if you do it yourself. If you have someone rebuild the tranny, might as well get upgraded parts at the same time. Rodney's standard rebuild is ~1300 or so I believe.

If I do the rebuild I'll definitely go with an upgraded unit.

Thanks!

Sounds like synchros. Strange that it would be the 6th gear... I had my 1-2 go out but I kind of know why :D

I also had the problem of popping out of 1st on my 2001. I never thought them related but now that you mention you have both issues.

Are you still under warranty? If so definitely go that route. I had a 1st, 2nd, and synchros rebuild done at no charge when I had my '01.

Nope, not under warranty.

Problems are pretty mild so I'll keep it the way it is for now, but if the popping out issue persists I'll get it fixed.

I just had my trans rebuilt under warranty and the mech showed me damaged teeth on the 6th gear as well. That was 1 of 2 gears that needed replacing. He told me he has seen it a few times now and cant figure out how 6th gear is getting damaged because it would seem to him be abnormal.

Maybe I just shift like a tard!
