ive got a 3.42 gear 6 speed setup. Im looking for more of a "kick" and a little quicker times, is getting 4.10 gears worth it?
For those of you who have done it, what is the average $$ of doing this?
Also, how long does it take (labor hours) to do it?
4.10's are awesome but you need to factor in your future mods to see if they make sense for you. Lower shift rpms may cost you an extra gear in the 1/4. Low gearing is not as FI friendly either. That said, they are great on a h/c car that can be a little peaky to begin with.
Mine cost about $1200 with install on a DTE GP but that does not include a core charge. They can be installed in just a few hours by an experienced shop.
I had 4.10's instyalled in my car cost me about 1100 at East Coast supercharging, but they did a few other things for me as well. I kind of wish I went with 3.73 or 3.90's because i am planning to do some FI. But then again I have been planning on FI for 2 years and still havent. Its just to much gearing for FI car. But I have read that some people on this forum actually have FI with the 4.10's and dont mind it. But if you dont plan on FI then definatly do 4.10 they are quite a kick in the pants!
They will lower your ET because the car is going to be in its happy RPM spot more. But, you gotta shift better to make it all come together properly since there will be an extra shift in the 1/4.
I've got a 3.90 DTE rear in mine. They'll run you about ~$1200. If you're going to use anything other than street tires then get the chunk built with a hardened output shaft. That will run you about another $300.
I'm not sure how much it would cost for labor. People on the forum have had theirs done for $450-$600. I was getting quotes to do the clutch at the same time, so I was hearing $650-$1200.
Gears aren't a substitute for real HP, but it will put your C5 in the powerband it likes. All of the fast cars have gears!
