The 97'-00' A4's have the locking plate removed from the steering column during the current recall. A CLB is NOT required for these models after the current recall is performed as the steering column can't lock up without the locking plate. On some '97 & 98's, installing the CLB will throw codes.

How do I know if the locking plate on my 2000 has been removed from a recall? I've got a CLB ready to go on but not if this has ocurred.
If you can turn your steering wheel without the key in the ignition (i.e., column is not locked in position), then you no longer have a functional column lock. If that's the case, congrats.
Two years ago my '98 locked up, dealer supposedly fixed, then yesterday it locked again and they wouldn't do anything since it had been over 12/12. Thank goodness I was able to get a bypass in a matter of min. and don't have to worry about that happening again.
