This might be of interest to anyone who has problems with the reverse lights not working on a 6 speed. I realized that the #21 fuse in the passenger footwell was blown. I replaced it and within a few days was blown again. After looking in the manual, I got a better idea of the circuit. The transmission reverse switch is the next thing in the circuit after the fuse. I removed the switch and using an ohmneter, repeatedly actuated the switch. I found that the part that is threaded into the transmission case was intermittently shorting out to the switch terminals. Replaced the switch and all is well. The car is covered by warranty, but I wouldn't let anyone touch the car. You know how it is. Just thought I'd pass this information on.
Common probelm. I had the switch fail also after about 3 years. An easy way to tell is that the approach lights (reverse) work, but the lights will not come on in reverse gear.
Any tech write-ups for this? I would appreciate the help since my car has no reverse lights but they are on when i deactivate the alarm.
The Reverse Lamp Switch is located on the passenger side of the transmission, about midway along the tranny and towards the top. If has a standard wiring harness attachment, and the switch itself screws into the tranny case. Since it's on a separate circuit than the approach lights, the blown fuse does not affect the ALs.
If you back the car up some ramps, there is enough room to get to it. Disconnect the wiring harness, and use an ohm meter to check if either pin on the switch is shorted to the tranny case (which it will be).
You should be able to remove the switch fairly easily. Put in new one, replace fuse in passenger footwell and you should be all done.
