I am looking for advice and opinions on what gear ratio to upgrade to. 3.90's or 4.10's. I had 4.10's in my camaro SS and I liked them a lot, but was wodering if they are a good fit for the C5. I have an 01 with the manual trans.
I have 4:10's with all the bolt-ons.
On the street:
The gears are just fine. I find I can skip 2nd and 4th in town. On the highway in 6th I am at about 78mph for 2k rpm's and the motor isn't bogged. If I'm doing 55-60 and want to pass I just push the gas, no bog.
On the track:
On street tires I ran a 12.78 @ 110.99. I didn't have to shift to 5th and was about 5500 rpm at the trap. If I was a better driver I would have done much better. My 60' was 2.00 secs.
I'd like to suggest installing a hardened pass-side output shaft if you are bumping your ratio. You have to take them out anyway for the swap so there is no labor charge and you won't have to replace it when you break the stock one.
The tuner that installed mine gave me this guideline:
up to 500rwhp=4.10
up to 600rwhp=3.90
up to 700rwhp=3.73
700rwhp+=3.42
BTW, I feel this was a great mod to my car. Hope this helps.
Is there a gear calculator anywhere that tells what speeds you would be at for different rpms. I'd like to compare the two gear ratios myself. I had 4.10s on my '99 Camaro SS and loved them. However, my C5 is putting down 70rwhp than my Camaro did. I want to make sure I don't go with too much gear and loose traction all the time.
Thanks for the tables, guys! I probably won't do a gear upgrade until my next round of mods in about 6-9 months. Right now, I'm thinking 3.90s because of where my top speed would be in 5th gear at 6700 rpms.
Uh, 3.90s is what you want. I put 4.10s on my wife's A4 and love them. I've got 4.10s on order for my 6-speed. If you get the 3.90s then my car will be quicker than yours!
