Has anyone heard about a 2004 C5 recall for a steering linkage problem? The NHTSA website shows the following:
Make: CHEVROLET
Model: CORVETTE
Year: 2004
Recall Number: 04V273000
Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN, THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL STUD NUT/WASHER ASSEMBLIES WITH WASHERS WERE MADE OF THE WRONG MATERIAL. THE WASHERS MAY FRACTURE AND BECOME LOOSE OR FALL AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE, REDUCING CLAMP LOAD. SEPARATION OF THE CONTROL ARM BALL STUD AND STEERING KNUCKLE, DUE TO DISENGAGEMENT OF THE TAPERED ATTACHMENT AND RETAINING NUT, IS POSSIBLE.
Consequence:
IF THE CONTROL ARM SEPARATES FROM THE KNUCKLE, THE AFFECTED CORNER OF THE VEHICLE WILL DROP AND THE CONTROL ARM WOULD BE FORCED DOWNWARD, CONTACTING THE WHEEL. THE AFFECTED WHEEL COULD TILT OUTWARD AND CREATE A DRAGGING ACTION THAT WOULD TEND TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND CREATE A TENDENCY FOR THE VEHICLE TO TURN IN THE DIRECTION OF THE AFFECTED WHEEL. IN EXTREME SITUATIONS, THE AFFECTED WHEEL ASSEMBLY COULD SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE. SEPARATION OF THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY WOULD ALSO SEVER THAT WHEEL;S HYDRAULIC BRAKE HOSE AND RESULT IN DIMINISHED BRAKING PERFORMANCE OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy:
GM HAS NOT YET PROVIDED A REMEDY OR OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339 OR CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.
Notes:
GM RECALL NO. 04043. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATIONS AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).
UPDATE: 7-1-04 FROM GM CUST. SERVICE
RECALL INVOLVES CADILLAC CTS AND CORVETTES WITH PRODUCTION DATES JAN. 8, 2004 THROUGH APRIL 20, 2004. APPROX 42,000 VEHICLES.
If I had an '04, I think I'd be keeping an eye on that washer from time to time, or better yet, get it replaced now. If there is a recall your costs will be reimbursed to you.
If I had an 04, I would replace the washer myself and stuff the cost. That washer is cheaper than a crash. Who says 1st year vehicles have bugs, what about last year vehicles?
Just checked the "MyGMC" website for my 04 Coupe (which is based on my VIN) and the site says there are no recalls. Maybe my particular VIN isn't affected though.
My car was built in July 03. Was wondering if maybe the "on certain passenger vehicles" might be on Vettes that were built later in the year.
Can someone else who is registered with the Chevy/GM website check their information to see whether they have been included in the recall?
Aside from the physical description of the problem I wonder if there is any audiable warning/noise associated with this? My 03 Z has started making a "clunking" noise coming from the front end. It's been to the dealer once and all they did was confirm that the previous owner had lowered the car, blamed the noise on that and put the car back to factory Z06 specs. It still makes the noise albeit less loudly and less often but it still happens everyonce in a while.
Probably not on your GM website as I called Chevrolet & they have not established a recall list & won't admit to anything. Told them about the listing on the NHTSA site & informed Chevrolet customer service that if it happens to mine & is damaged I will go after them to replace the car & get my insurance company to back it. Can't believe Chevrolet is that stupid that they have no answer according to the recall listed for the problem. Also the other recall for our column locks they only sent out 2 batches of recalls & have 2 more batches to send out. :mad :mad
