When is it a good time to think about your safty?? The roll bars can be purchased for a few hundred dollars and three hours of time to install and weld. If you get a roll bar you most likely will get a 5 or 6 point harnes system too. another $150-$250 each - need one for each seat.
For drag racing I beleive most tracks require roll bars if your drive under 12 sec. Road race circuits and open road races it depends on your class and the event.
What do you plan on doing with your car is the first question to ask yourself?
I agree that safety is ALWAYS a good idea.. and roll bars in a sports car would also always be a good idea. My question was more along the lines of where is the threshold where it goes from a "good idea" to pretty much being a necessity? From a safety standpoint and from a track-requirement standpoint. My car is a supercharged daily driver that will spend SOME time on the track.
IMHO it is the moment that you think about it. That is when you should put it in. Not when some magical HP number is reached or a LOW ET or over 100 mph driving.
Nessisty on a drag strip is 12 sec and under for most NHRA tracks I believe. On a road race course, any competitive racing, but not a roll bar, but a roll cage and harness and a fire system is required for racing.
for DE schools, that is up to you, but if you put slicks on, put a roll bar in too.
