I have the Exedy single in my Z06. At Etown last saturday, I made four qualifying passes. The third and fourth runs, after I powershifted to third and started accelerating, at 5000rpm the tach stopped climbing very fast and I shifted into fourth. When the tach got to 4500-4700 rpm, the tach did the same thing and it felt like the clutch was spinning because the feeling of acceleration wasn't there. Any opinions?
Also, when I was staging for the eliminations, I lit up the first set of bulbs and let the clutch out a little to light the second set. Well, the clutch had a metallic grinding sound and I could feel it through the clutch pedal. Engagement was definitely on/off at that point. But I drove it three hours home and it feels fine with out any noise. Man...this clutch and the install were too expensive for this kind of crap to be happening! Anybody with an opinion on this issue?
First I've heard of a problem with the Exedy. I am waiting for UPS to drop off my twin now. Let us know how this develops, including all the tech details, like what setup you're running what hydraulics on the clutch, etc.
Tony's has always done good work for me, though its been a while. Don't be afraid to give him a call.
Yeah, it sounds like a problem with the car. Think about it - you're at 5000rpm. If the clutch starts slipping, the revs are gonna fly up and smack the rev limiter (without the normally-associated acceleration). If you're hitting a wall a 5000 you might be getting detonation or something similar.
If the clutch were slipping the the tach would climb much faster than mph. Something else seems wrong.
Hey Mike,
I agree. Not the clutch.
Assume you hammered the car on the way home and all was fine again. That rules out an air leak around the MAF from a torque induced displacement of a connection.
Were you running a very low fuel load on those passes? AND did you gas up before the drive home?
If yes, your drag strip symptom may have resulted from fuel stavation on the shift. Happened to me last year on two consecutive passes at MIR.
Another possibility is the wiring harness shorting out momentarily on the shift. There is a thread on the other forum about that. I'll see if I can find it and edit in the link.
How do you explain the subsequent clutch behavior & noises at staging?
This is what had me pull out of the staging area. The metallic grind and pulsating when the clutch engagement point was reached.
I went by Tony's and he tried to call Tom at Carolina clutch, but he was out for the day. Tony said maybe the clutch was clamping down too much at higher rpms. I saw Keith at the dyno and he said it sounded like knock retard.
I had between a 1/4 and 1/2 tank of gas.
