Default Door panel/window rattle

I took off my driver's door panel in order to prep it for the dealer when replacing the DCM, and when I was putting the door panel back on I noticed that there was a rattling sound when I hit the panel to set the pins. I don't think that the tech messed with any adjustments, since the window fits just as it did before when it is all the way up, but you never know. Also, there is no excessive play in the window in the fully raised position.

It only rattles when the window is all the way down, and I have to actually hit the door panel with my hand or close the door to make it rattle. If I raise the window just enough so it is even with the top of the weatherstripping, it no longer rattles. Also, when comparing the driver's side to the passenger side, the passenger side window sits deeper in the door than the driver's side (about 1/4 - 1/2" difference). I don't know if this has any affect, but I just thought that I would mention it.

I did a search, but could not find any info on fixing my specific problem. Does anyone have any tips/ideas on fixing the rattle? Also, I made sure that the metal clips at the top of the door panel fit tightly on the door lip (I bent tham with pliers to make them tighter, but this did not help the rattle).

Thanks,

Chris

One more thing... there is no rattle when the door panel is off, only with the door panel on and the window all the way down.

There's some foam in there that falls off on it's own after a while. Your mechanic must've knocked it off without replacing it. Check your Helm's, I'm pretty sure it describes it in the rattle section. Kinda strange that your door rattles when you bang it; mine only rattles when I shut the door with the window down, but not when I hit it with my hand, nor while driving.

I don't have the manual, can you tell me where the foam is located?

There's two issues in the manual about rattling.

Rattle from Door
Problem
Rattle from the door with the window open.

Possible Cause
The door window cables are contacting the window.

Correction
1. Close the door with the window down and listen for a rattle.
2. Remove the door trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Door in Doors.
3. Loosely tie strap the inner cable to the door inner panel using the hole behind the lock control rods.
4. Make sure the cables are also loosely time strapped to each other.
5. Install the door trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Door.

Rattle when Closing the Door
Problem
Rattle when door is closed with the window down.

Possible Cause
The door window contacts the regulator at the upper rear cable end.
1. Remove the door trim panel and the water deflector.
2. Clean the cable end (the green piece).
3. Wrap a 15 mm (0.6 in) by 40 mm (1.6 in) hook and loop insulator around the cable end.
4. Install the door water deflector and trim panel.

Leaftye,

Thanks for the info. One more questions if you don't mind:

I am assuming the water deflector is the the black weatherstripping attached to the door on the outside of the car (the one on te inside is stapled to the door panel on my car)? If so, how do you remove this piece?

Thanks,

Chris

Steve,

Only my driver's side rattles, and yes, I can raise the window a smidge and it goes away. But this is a hassle and a evidently there is a fix.

I will attenpt the fix in the next day or two and let you know.

I don't know if its a coinsidence but mine started shortly after I did the dialectric greasing of all my rubber. Wasn't a problem for the first 12K miles.

How long have you had the problem? Are you going to bring it in to GM.

You know....I didn't notice it until after Andy's BBQ. Was yours rattling before that. Maybe the tritip smoke got in the windows>

Our senses usually ignore things that aren't as pressing, so if there was a louder rattle or noise, and then you fixed it, it leaves your senses free to notice other things. I'm not going to give any science because it'll get me flamed...science isn't tolerated around these parts...

1. There's a rattle coming from the doors when bass from the POS Bose stereo is playing.
2. Fixed the bass rattle with a touch of glue or a rubber band, but now the steering wheel is squeeking when turned.
3. Fixed the steering wheel squeek with a squirt of silicone lube, but now the suspension squeeks when going over speed bumps.
4. Fixed the suspension squeek by adjusting the sway bars clamps and greased the bearings, but now the roof squeeks under the same situation.
5. Fixed the roof squeek by putting dielectric grease on all the weatherstrip, but now there's a rattle coming from the front corner(s) of the cabin.
6. Fixed this rattle by adjusting the bump stops for the hoods, but now there's rattles coming from the doors again, and they seem to be a couple types of rattles, each caused by different things.
7. Fixed these rattles by lining various inner door areas with felt or foam, but there's still a rattle from the rear of the doors, but it only happens whenever the passenger seat is empty.
8. Fixed the rattle by keeping the belt buckle from vibrating against the trim, but now the roof rattles when the car vibrates over washboard roads.
9. Fixed the roof rattle by lining the roof pin holes with felt or replacing the trim panel, but now there's an annoying sewing machine sound coming from the engine bay, particularly at low RPMs.
10. Fixed the sewing machine sound by upgrading the rockers...
11. There's still loud tires, resonance, belt and fan noise, misaligned windows and roofs.

And this could go on and on. Most of the stuff I listed happens to most C5's, but we don't really notice some things until we fix the thing that's most annoying to us at whatever point in time. Often times these problems crop up because we make the car ride more stiffly by lowering the car or swapping parts out. Then what used to be a fine mannered and quiet car starts to have noises. I can accept that my car is quiet as configured from the factory, but I can also accept that if I put a T1 equivalent (rock hard) suspension and Nitto II 305/30's on all corners, that my car is going to make WAY more noises.

I found that most noises/rattles and squeeks are rendered insignifcant by simply....

1. Taking off the roof panel
2. Rolling down the windows
3. Cruising at speeds above 100 mph
4. Blasting "I cant get no satisfaction"..STONES
5. Squirting equal gobs of dialectric grease into both ears
6. If you still hear anything ..... then sing along with Mick

I'm building my car for the track, so the rattles will be drowned out by me going "ow" whenever the car scrapes over any undulation in the road, or a different "ow" anytime I hit a bump!

My passenger window rattled when all the way down and just like you said, if I roll it up a bit it went away. I took the door panel off and when I did the adjusting nut at the back (used for window tip in) fell out. The more you turn the nut CCW it tips the rear of the window in. Mine was probably all they way out and eventually came off. Once I put it back on the rattle went away completely.

Is this the nut that looks like a (reverse) torx, and is at the lower left hand corner of the door?

I also noticed that I am getting some wind noise at 80 mph+ at the lower rear corner of the window.

What tool did you use to loosen that nut?

Ok, I fixed the rattle. The metal rivet that holds the pulley on the top right (when facing the inside of the door) was barely touching the glass when the window was all the way down and causing a rattle.

So I took a felt disk/pad and stuck it to the face of the rivet and the rattle is gone. Also, on my 2002 Z06, the cables were tied to the door and the ends of the cable had a plastic bushing that would keep it from rattling.

But of course, no good deed goes unpunished. When I was trying to put the felt on, like an idiot I raised the window and it rubbed on the window track bar and scratched the glass. So now I have to try to get it buffed out, or replaced all together (which will probably mean more problems).

Damn Chris, that sucks, but I know how you feel, I do it all the time! It's like you go to fix one thing, and in the process you break another. If I didn't consider tinkering with the car a hobby, I'm sure I'd go crazy with this endless cycle of car repair!
