Ok, I am probably beating a dead horsie here but can anyone point me to an old thread in this forum that compares and contrasts different cams for an LS1 w/automatic 4spd? I need to be able to pass smog (CA vehicle) so it can't be too radical.
Ed ,
read your e-mail and give Shaun a call .
I spent a lot of research time and it all paid off with these guys mentioned in my e-mail, with me it was about reliability with performance.
Good Luck

The Vinci's do all the testing for Crane and Roger works with their engineer on cam designs for years, they developed this line of cams for the mustangs and now the ls1 motors, unique egg shaped lobes have very fast ramps and taper off they have a smaller overall lobe that acts small than performs much larger--
In order to pass smog, you need a cam with no overlap and it is usually best to stick with one that has at least –3 degrees of overlap. There have been people that have gone more aggressive and passed but you are taking a chance.
One method to calculate the overlap is: [(intake duration @ 0.050 + exhaust duration @ 0.050) /2] – 2(LSA) = overlap. For example my cam is 224/224 with a 114 LSA. That would end up being –4 degrees of overlap.
One valve spec that you can get aggressive on is valve lift, as the it does not hurt smog numbers. I’m using a Comp XE-R 224/224 581/581 on a 114 that I got from Andy at A&A in Oxnard. You might find it helpful to give him a call: 805- 278 4107 (shop) 805- 479- 5885 (cell)
