Default Help Please! Sevice Colum Lock Error

I get in my 99 Frc this morning and for some reason the Service Colum Lock is lit up on the display. I put my key in and the car starts, but the colum will not unlock. Is it possiable to have a fuse that went bad? I know there is a solenoid that unlocks the colum. Is this the computer gone haywire? Please help any info would be helpfull. I am scared if I have it towed to the dealer that they will mess up the car because I can not unlock the colum. I ran a scanner for DTCs and nothing is found. This doesnt make any sense.

Thanks,
Mike Gisel

Thanks I will try this after I get out of work. Is this some type of electrical problem, or mechanical? I called the dealer and they want me to flatbed the car. They will not tell me exactly why this happens. The person I spoke to said that she will check my Vin for a recal. I am just currious, is there any way this will happen while driving?

Sorry you got burned.

Get a CLB and be done with it. It will be a while before the 99's make it for recall. I have not heard of this happening while the car is moving, but it may have happened to someone.

Both times mine locked up the car was in reverse and would move, would also move forward in drive. Very scarey. Reduced power may have been activated, but I never saw it.

Turn the key to the off position and remove it from the ignition. Next tug the steering wheel back and forth very firmly several times, it may help to give you better leverage if you stand outside the car while doing this. Then get insde and turn the key to the "on position" without starting the engine and the column lock should release. This worked for me.
Once you release the pin and unlock the steering column, do not attempt to start the engine until after you install the bypass or it may lock up again. You might not get a second chance if it does.

Just follow the installation instructions that come with the CLB kit, it's really not difficult at all. Hardest part is to re-attach the lower dash panel. You can buy a CLB at thunderracing.com.

Here is a link to the best instructions for installing a CLB: http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?ar...f4a2979a77ef4c

Hope this helps.

The Column lock bypass (CLB) is a small electronic device that fools the BCM into thinking that the column lock motor and locking device are functioning normaly. With CLB installed, you will never have to ever worry about the steering wheel locking up again. The kit allows you to energize the CL motor (unlocking the steering wheel) and installing an electronic divice to fool the BCM into thinking that everything is normal.
I have the CLB installed and I had a CL error massage that would NOT clear (SERVICE COLUMN LOCK SOON) :mad

I disconnected the battery and it reset the BCM and
now the error is G O N E

Disconnect the battery and see if you can clear the error message and get the CL motor to work again!!

PLEASE let us know how you make out!!

Wow you guys have been so helpful. The link for the CLB is great. I called the dealer this morning and they said that my car does not qualify for the recall. I dont know why because this could be a safety hazzard. Here is the artical I found. Recal artical

Thanks again,
Mike Gisel

Well the CLB is out of stock. The good news is after following directions regarding pulling the stearing wheel clockwise, it unlocked!!! I took the key out and the column locked again, then put the key in and it unlocked without a problem. I hope it stays working until I get my bypass.
Thanks again guys.

I can't believe that there is a single forum member out there that still has not installed the CLB!
Please, folks, DON'T PLAY RUSSIAN ROULETTE!!!!!!
It's gonna' happen to you if you don't get the CLB!
Think about it -
how good are you at picking the fastest line in the bank?
how often are you put on hold and your next birthday arrives before you're answered?
how many times have you "just" missed the green arrow?
how many times have you gone out to eat and gotten the rookie waitress?
how many times have you called a "service" line and gotten the answering system that has you there for 20 minutes only to leave you with a new dial tone?

See?

It's gonna' happen to you!!!!!

GET THE CLB NOW!!!!

If enought people call the NTSB at 1-888-327-4236 and complain, maybe they will recall all of them.

STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE
Manufacturer Recall Number 04V060000
Issue Area STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE
Units Affected 126,624
Defect ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK SYSTEMS (ECL), WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO “LOCK, THE ECL PREVENTS TURNING OF THE STEERING SYSTEM. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, THE ECL UNLOCKS THE STEERING SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED SO THAT IF THE COLUMN FAILS TO UNLOCK WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED AND THE CUSTOMER TRIES TO DRIVE, THE FUEL SUPPLY WILL BE SHUT OFF SO THAT THE VEHICLE CANNOT MOVE WHEN THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE STEERED. IF VOLTAGE AT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IS LOW OR INTERRUPTED, HOWEVER, THE FUEL SHUT OFF MAY NOT OCCUR AND THE VEHICLE CAN BE ACCELERATED WHILE THE STEERING SYSTEM IS LOCKED.
Consequences IF THIS OCCURS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING.
Corrective Action ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL DISABLE THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK BY REMOVING THE COLUMN LOCK PLATE. WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS REMOVED, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WILL LOCK BUT THE STEERING COLUMN WILL NOT LOCK. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL REPROGRAM THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, PERFORM A DIMENSIONAL CHECK OF THE COLUMN LOCK AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE LOCK PLATE. THE STEERING COLUMN ON THESE VEHICLES WILL CONTINUE TO LOCK WHEN THE KEY IS REMOVED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON APRIL 26, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.
Note Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact the Manufacturer.
