StevieB can help you with the hole-drilling - he's done than to his Stinger-R, but was unable to get the airbridge to fit under the hood. However, others with 97-00 C5s have successfully installed the airbridge. Even when Jim Hall was relocating, he had kept the website functional and asked Andy at A&A Corvette Specialties to fill the intake orders. From what I've seen in the Halltech website, you can order as usual.

I thought I read somewhere that the larger airbridge of the Stinger sometimes rubs the hood when installed. Is this true? I also thought I read that on the 98-00 cars that holes needed to be drilled in the intake to install properly? One other thing, I heard that the owner of Halltech was having health issues and they were moving the company to WI (my home state ) I was wondering if I can still place an order on their website and if they are currenty shipping product while relocating? Can anyone confirm or deny any of these concerns I have. Again, maybe I'm crazy but I'm pretty sure I have read these things somewhere on CF. If they are not true I may yet purchase the Stinger.

Thanks
Well, I have a 98 and I was unable to use the Stinger air bridge. It actually made the hood bulge because of its thickness. I also had to drill a hole in the smooth coupler for some kind of sensor that goes there. As it turns out I'm still happy with my choice. As stated above, the Stinger has the largest surface area for its filter element and is still cheaper than a Blackwing. A Blackwing utilizes the stock air bridge, so even if you can't use the Halltech air bridge, you’re still better off than if you went with the Black wing.

Just so I have everything straight...

The Stinger air filter will fit right on to the stock airbridge on my 99 if the Halltech airbridge is too big?

StevieB- are you the only person so far that had a problem with the Stinger airbridge not fitting under the hood or is this something that is a rare occurence?

Just out of curiosity why would it fit fine in the newer Vettes and not the older ones, aren't the hoods and engine compartment essential identical?

I don't recall anybody else saying they had a problem. I tried every possible way of positioning it, and even went as far as removing the hood liner for additional clearance. I'm just guessing, but I figure that the top radiator cover on the newer C5s is different and that is why Dave and other guys have NOT had issues with it. I'm using the stock air bridge and I modified the smooth coupler to go between it and the filter. The stock one does not extend down as low on the radiator shroud when used with the Stinger filter.
I also did the CAI mod Dave designed and I'm happy with the results. I had a few mods done at the same time, so I'm not really sure how much of the increased performance can be directly attributed to the filter and CAI.
All I have is SOTP comparison for before and after differences. I can tell you that before I had: 1) GHL bullett cat back 2) Stinger intake and CAI mod 3) reprogramming that eliminated torque management, raised rev limiter and shift points, that the car would not even chirp the tires when it shifted to second gear. (I have an A4, 3.15 rear end). It now smokes the tires all the way through first and continues to smoke them in second gear. Like I said, just SOTP results.

I have heard of no issues other than Steve's clearance problem in his 98. I have a 2001 and the everything fits perfectly. In fact, many forum members have installed the Stinger-R without any issues at all. There's also a slight chance (as he mentioned) that Steve's upper radiator cover is slightly taller than every other C5's cover, since no one else has had the same problem.

The tunnel bridge on my Stinger-R rubs on the hood liner but the hood closes with no problem. When I open the hood, there's a noticeable small indentation in the liner. My Vette's an '04. I'm wondering if others with '00+ Vettes are getting the same thing? I might have to play with mine a bit to see if I can get it to sit down some more.

Slight rotation of the tunnelbridge would do this. Try loosening the clamp and rotating one way or the other.

I ended up going with the Z06 Lid and a K&N filter and am very pleased with it.
I have that also... but mainly because my 2002 was still under warranty and I wanted to use a stealth-type intake upgrade. But my 2002 's warranty is up later this month - and now am leaning towards something that has some "looks" , as well as improving intake air flow.

I'm glad this thread was started.

I read on another forum that a guy installed one of those dual cone intakes and actually lost HP. He had before and after documentation to prove it. They came to the conclusion that the air became turbulent and that was the reason for the loss. I found those results rather surprising.

Thanks to all of you for your insight. I know a lot of these questions have been asked over and over. While a "newbe" at the C5, I am willing and able to help with your C3 questions!! :-)

My biggest thing now is what to do, and what not to do since it is new and still under warranty. Don't want to do something that might end that with only 200 miles on the odometer!!

Once again, guys, Thanks for your advice.

Frank

I just came back from my 1st drive with my Stinger R installed. There is a noticeable improvement in performance and the exhaust tone has deepened slightly. It appears to be exactly as advertised in feedback on this forum. No codes, rough idle, or anything negative.

A couple of other comments...

Jim has finished his move and is back answering email personally. I ordered mine on 6/19 - after he closed his old place - and he shipped it to me on 7/2.

I have an 2k A4. Took me 1 hour to install from the time I began reading the directions downloaded from the Halltech website to the time I finished and washed my hands. Piece of cake. No cutting or drilling. Everything worked like a champ.

There are 2 versions of the Stinger R. One for the 97-2000 with the extra hole for the 2nd sensor that plugs into the bridge near the throttle body and one for the 2001+ without the extra sensor hole. Not sure how long there have been 2 versions, but if someone has had to cut a hole for the extra sensor they may have gotten a 2001+ version and really needed the other.

I read here about potential problems with the Stinger fitting under the hood, so I looked at my hoodliner before I pulled the stock stuff. There was already an impression in the hood liner to provide clearance for the stock bridge. (Or maybe the stock bridge rests against the hoodliner and made that impression.) I don't notice a buldge or anything with the Stinger installed now.

No regrets here. Dave68 was the biggest influence for me on this decision. Thanks Dave!

I have the TRAP but I think the top/air bridge portions are the same as for the STINGER. I too have indentation on the hood liner on my 04. Doesn't seem to be a problem though.

I ordered a Granatelli dual K & N filter system. Well, let me re-phrase that. I actually ended up having to order two seperate K & N dual systems. The first one I ordered was Y-shaped, but I quickly found out it butted against the front frame of the car. So, I had to re-order a new one that was T-shaped. The T-shaped fit no problem. I would recommend a T-shape set up if you go the dual filter route.
