Ive called around to several shops to discuss setting up my Y2K ls1 with 2002 ls6 heads. I have TR224, 918, 7.4 rods, and kooks LT header for the Y2K ls1 heads. Im getting mixed reviews on the LS6 heads willing work correctly because the header set up changed from 2000 to 2001, and the valves are longer in the 2002 heads.
Who has done the 2002+ years ls6 heads on a Y2K - years, and what issues arose?
For the headers to work, they need to be the same year as your car so that the AIR tubes on the headers will line up with the plumbing on your car. The headers will have no problem bolting up to any year LS1 or LS6 heads.
The LS6 valves are longer because the stock LS6 Cam has a smaller base circle and the added length of the valves maintains the geometry with stock 7.400 length pushrods. It happens to be the case that aftermarket cams are ground on a base circle 0.030 inches smaller than stock, which is within 0.002 inches of the base circle of the LS6 cam so you should have no problems with the geometry with stock 7.400 length pushrods.
I believe the lift of the TR224 cam is less than .570, so the stock '02 LS6 springs should be fine
I have had the setup you describe for a few years now except 221/558/114 but this weekend going to the 224/581. You will have no problems as long as you use hardened pushrods and new timing chain. One of the new chain dampeners would not hurt either.
I have a 2001 Coupe with stock 2002 Z06 heads and valves. I am using a 220/553/114 cam with used stock pushrods and a new stock Z06 timing chain for 10.000 miles, no problems at all. 6500 rev limiter hit daily. Of course if you buy expensive aftermarket parts, you will be just that much better off.
I have 2002 LS6 heads in my '00 coupe, with TPIS headers that hooked up to both my original heads and the 02 LS6 heads just fine. Should be no worries here.
