I recently purchased a set of ZO6 calipers from a forum member. They were chiped up and the rubber badly burned. Looks like they may have even caught on fire. The post said they need repainting. I have a friend who has a chrome plating shop and offered to acid dip and powder coat them for free. He was worried that dipping them could mess them up. Has anyone ever dipped their calipers and rebuilt them? Any intructions for rebuilding the calipers?
When you buy the GM rebuild kits (I got them from a forum vendor), they not only have all the parts and grease for rebuilding they have a very good set of instructions. I am not sure I would acid dip them, only because I wouldn't know what to expect for results.
Do not acid dip the calipers. The acid will eat at the bores and ruin the very fine finish that is there. The seal on the caliper piston needs a very smooth microfine surface to do it's job. A better approach would be to find a friend / shop that can bead blast the outer surfaces for you. Leave the pistons in place when blasting and there is no chance of hurting the bores. Get the rebuild kit from Fitchner's, probably the best price around.
Thanks Guy's. Great advice ,bead blasting sure sounds like a better idea to me. Plus I have been waiting for an excuse to purchase a bead blaster box. I purchased the rebuild kit from Gene at Fred Beans GMC for $45 front and rear including shipping. That was $44 cheaper than my local dealership and helps support forum vendors to boot.
