OK to plug a GY run-flat?
Today while removing my wheels to install my new Sportbrake rotors, I noticed a BIG nail head in my tire. Actually looks like it could even be a masonary "cut nail". Hasn't been causing a problem, have not lost any air pressure according to the DIC, but it don't belong there and I want it gone. Is it OK to plug a run-flat, or do I have to get new tires?
I had the same situation on one of my GY runflats. I had the tire center dismount it, plug it, and have had no problems whatsoever. It didn't even affect the pressure sensor.
My rear runflats are almost worn out, and I found a big nail in one of them the night before the Corvette Forum Cruise-In to the National Corvette Museum. I wasn't going to miss that, so I just pluged it and watched the air pressure on the DIC, and it has never leaked and that was 3K miles ago. I didn't want to waste the money to have a tire shop fix it because the tire is worn out anyway, and it was the middle of the night and we were leaving at 6am. I know GY frowns on it, but I am not going to go back with GY's anyway, so it was a good short-term fix. The prefered method is to have a tire shop patch it from the inside, but then they will say you lose your speed rating. If you do plug it from the outside it makes it almost impossible to get a good patch on the inside as it messes up the belts. So either plug it and live with it, or take it to a tire shop and have it fixed the right way. Just my .02 cents.
Actually, the speed rating is good for up to one plug. If you have any more, all bets are off. This statement was sent to me by Goodyear Customer Service.
just before I put Kumhos on I plugged my runflat with no problem, also plug my cycle tires with no problems, had it up to 170,some safety ***** would have you buying tires.
