C5 2000 coupe ..... Now when I start it for about a minute I get the .... clack, clack, clack (on and on) It idles rough, but then goes away and all is well. My question if it is the lifters, (which I think it is) what do you think I'm looking at to have replaced? I just spent $3000.00 for all new clutch, input shaft, torgue tube, etc., and I'm kinda tapped. And, as you would know, my steering column locked last night. Luck for me it released this morning after turning hard back and forth on the wheel.
I can't take much more of these Gremlins .....
I love the car!!!!! Help.
wouldn't the piston slap always be there? this seems to go away after a minute making me think a lifter is not pumped up yet or has colasped ...... then it builds up pressure and all seem fine. It's been toooo long since I took a motor apart.
Boy it sounds real tinney to my ..... but I read what you gave me on piston slap .... don't know what would be worse ... car out of warranty
Here's the deal..
That site is full of the people that want new cars. They see their view, and that's all. There are alot of LS1 motors out there with Piston Slap that are running fine, and strong. It is just "ugly" sounding at first startup after the engine is cold.
My old '99 had it, not super loud, but you could hear it, and I had friends ask what it was, so it wasn't just me.
If it is piston slap, you will need to decide if you can live with the sound, if not, it's going to be pricey to cure.
You could get some Headers and a Cam, then with all the ruckus that makes, you won't hear the other noises.

Tony, Thanks for the info on piston slap. After hearing how it sounds on one of the sites, mine sounds like that. (almost sounded like solid lifters - but not as many)
So, are you saying that this is okay to leave (as long as you can stand the noise at first) and it will do no further harm to the engine????

First, I'm not a Doctor, nor do I play one on TV.
GM says it shouldn't cause any problems, but this may or may not be true. The information I have seen and from my experience on my 99, and my friend's 2002 Tahoe is that it is only a noise. There is no guarantee, but hey, take it to your local dealer and ask a service manager to check it out. Ask him specifically if he thinks it's slap, and if it is okay.
If he starts trying to quote you prices right away to fix it, remember, you aren't paying for anything right now... you need to research it first, alot of the time you can get a brand new motor for what some guys will charge you to fix yours... and he's probably just trying to turn the screws on you a bit.
