Hi;
Just looking for a answer to a question. Can you just do away with the h-pipe. Cut it off and weld the holes shut so you would have duals like we used to have many years ago no x or h. Or do these engines need the balance between both sides. I know it sounds dumb but just wondering.
Thanks
Yes, you can do it. You might lose some horsepower and it might be a bit louder, but otherwise nothing bad will happen. Oddly enough, I used to have one of those old school muscle cars ('69 Mustang, 302, Toploader, 9" rearend) and I paid a local muffler shop to put in an H-pipe.
I would leave the stock H-pipe alone as it does sound good. I had a Magnaflow X-pipe on my car for a week and did not like the the sound as much, it took the dual exhaust sound away.
I gave the X-pipe away after paying over $200.00 and then had to buy a new H-pipe again after cutting my stock pipe. Before you buy, listen to a car with an X-pipe first.
That crossover pipe is very desirable. As each cylinder fires and expels its exhaust gas, the crossover pipe allows the volume of both mufflers to be used for each cylinder. This allows less flow restriction which equals more power. Without the crossover pipe, each cylinder would only be firing into a single muffler. Motorcycles have had crossover pipes at least since the mid-1970s for this very reason. It is even more important on a motorcycle because it is difficult to put a large single muffler on a bike.
