Default CLB....Not always the answer

I have to admit, I've gotten a little lazy over the years, I just don't have the ambition that I had 20 years ago. I bought a "column lock bypass" kit last summer, but just didn't get around to installing it.

OK, I had a couple of weeks off from work, so I decided to install the CLB. I followed the instructions, and everything went well....for about 24 hours. Then I started to notice a "clicking" as I turned the steering wheel. I "uninstalled" the CLB, and the noise went away.

It seems that the CLB had somehow started to allow the "pin" or whatever, to come out slightly, and start hitting the column. Good thing it didn't lock up on me!!

I wonder if the motor had not withdrawn the pin completely?? I did the install on my 98 a4 and have had no problems (knock on wood) ....

Sounds like the pin was not retracted fully.

If it were me I would have used the cord to energize the solenoid again to fully retract the pin.

That's scarry, though.

My guess is that you didn't fully retract the pin and there was still a little freeplay and it took a little while for the pin to wiggle itself loose.

Suggest you try again, but this time don't use the cigarette lighter plug thing. When you are ready to disconnect the 4pin plug under the steering column..... turn on your ignition (don't start the car), wait for the pin to disengage and then pull the 4 pin plug. Turn off key and complete the CLB installation. You will get an error code on the DIC.... simply cycle thru the trouble codes and erase them.

This should fix the problem you had. If it doesn't and the click noise comes back..... then do not use the CLB system, as you have a potential safety issue that could lock up the steering wheel at speed.
