A "standard" rear diff costs about $900 and change from GM Parts direct.com What could cause it to whine could be anything form worn gears to bearings or output shafts thats assuming its at the proper oil level. Just my .02 for what its worth.

i take it you are talking about the one for sale [4-10] . probally due to improper set up of gears at time installation..i contacted the seller also and asked some questions about it... i would like the unit for about 200.oo ....then would take chance on setting the unit up properly...however whine may not be fixable at this point...special tools are required to set the getrag diff up...without them it is only guessing...i had interest because i have been waiting since march for 4.10 to become available again...500.00 is alot to pay for what may turn out to be core....
