Default trans cooler /engine heat higher

had a trans cooler installed on my 02 a4 at andy's. before my engine temps were 196 - 205 in the city on a 90 degree day .now 205 - 214. the tranny is only 170 -185 which means the cooler is doing a good job ,but i think that the cooler is heating up the air as it flows through the bottom to the rad. my fan settings are lowered to 204 /194 with stock thermostat .is there any other place to mount the trans cooler ?

I have my tranny cooler and oil cooler mounted in front of my radiator. I dont use my tanny cooler on the street as a certain amount of heat is needed for normal opperations. Only use the tranny cooler on the track when temps get above 250.

There are three pages of discussion about tranmission / oil coolers over in Autocross and Racing section
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=865821

In short if your oil does not get about 250 degrees you do not need an oil cooler. As far as a tranny coolers goes, it is about the same.

When you start tracken your car for 20 to 30 min at a time, no not drag racing, but road racing, and your redlineing your car 4 or 6 times every 2 min for 20 to 30 min at a time, then YES you need coolers, other then that most likely not. But hey each to his own. Kick your feet up and read our "LIVLEY DISCUSIONS" over in Autocross and Racing.

I would respectfully disagree with your assessment of what an acceptable temprature range is for an automatic transmission. I think 250 much to high. TCI has a section on their site where they talk about what happens to an Auto trans at different temp ranges. They believe somewhere between 175 and 225 is optimal.

I do not know if we could call them the last word on this issue. Until someone comes along with an opinion that has as much or more credibility I am going to go with their opinion.

The URL for TCI's opinions on this are at:

I have my rather large transcooler mounted on the right side of the condenser using the B&M kit with nylon rods obtained from Summit. The reason I chose the right side is that it offers more room to slip the rods in from behind the condenser.

You might also consider using a lower thermostat and programming your fans for a lower temp. I use a 160 stat with the first fan programmed on at 185.

I would agree that 250 is too high for most ATF fluid and many brands will start turning to varnish around 225. That is why I upgraded my previous cooler as I was seeing 235 after four laps on a road course.
