I saw a bunch of info on the steering wheel lock and want to see if this car that I have has had the recall done. Someone posted a recall in the main thread but it says in there that it is for 2000 model cars. Mine is an 01. I emailed GM and provided them with my vin, they replied back saying that my car was not due for any recalls (naturally). I want to take this car to the dealer to have a few issues addressed while it still has just over a month of warranty left and want to present them with a number that they can punch into their computer to point them to the recall info. Seems to me that that is what usually has to be done is that you need to inform them about the recall. Can anyone provide me the recall number that the dealership would understand?
I have a 2000 A4. I checked with my dealer and they said that mine wasn't covered either. Then mine failed. My dealer wanted to tow it in, but I wasn't too keen on towing. I got on this forum and someone told me to turn the steering wheel hard right, with key off. Then, while holding the wheel hard right, turn on the key. It worked like magic. Thanks to whoever that was.
I had my steering col. repaired on my extended warranty ($200 deductible). Then I called GM. They were very nice and refunded my $200. It would be nice if GM would be more up front with the problem, but I guess in the long run they treated me right.
That is the problem with GM is they don't own up to their issues. If the car wasn't so darn nice to drive, I wouldn't have a GM product for this reason. What did you tell them at GM to get them to cough up the $200?
guess what? i had the recall performed by a dealer about 4 months ago on my 2000 mn6. today, i attempted to start my car and a msg that said"remive key and wait 10 secs" which i did. i tried to restart, same msg w/ the added " steering column lock". i called the national help no. in the front of the vette manual, the first time i was told to disconnect the battery and wait 5 mins, didn't work, :; the 2nd time, i called the help line, while turning the key, pull on the steering wheel hard either direction, didn't work; end result is now sitting on tow truck awaiting monday dealer opening !!!! GM has had 5 years to fix this situation and i found out that this is their solution, which is confusion with no conclusion.
Yep, that is GM. They do it on the piston slap (www.pistonslap.com), another one of my favorites: the fabulous plastic intake gaskets which are good for $1300 or so on repair (http://www.gm-v6lemons.com) and who knows what else. It really does make me mad that they don't address the well known problems. Just keep collecting the money.
