Default Advise needed on long term engine plans

My 99 with 60k is using a lot of oil. Probably around a quart every 700 - 800 miles. I could cut down on the consumption probably by driving it easier but I would rather just buy a Civic if I have to do that and save some money! I plan on getting new rings put in this winter but I hate to not just go ahead and get the motor built while it is apart. My question is how much does the typical re-ring cost, and how much would various stages above that add to the cost. For example, how much more would a 400 rwhp h/c setup cost, or a 450 rwhp stroker motor cost, or a 500 rwhp 427, etc. I would be more specific but I really don't know how much money I'll have saved and I also don't know what I really want. My car is a daily driver in the summer so it must idle okay. I don't car about really smooth idling (I'm 22) but I don't want it dying on me every other stop sign. My plans originally were to save around 6-7K for a blower but that wouldn't be a good idea on a motor that is burning a lot of oil. I plan to have around 4-7K saved. Sorry for the broad question... I guess I'm asking what you have done or plan to do and how much power does it make and how much money did you spend. I don't autocross but I do plan to take it to the dragstrip every once in a while.

A re-ring is going to cost about between 3 to 5k depending who does it. You should call around and get quotes so you know exactly what looking at before you leap. It would be more economical to have your head and cam package installed at that time as well. When Cartek did my H/C package it was $1900 additional for the re-ring with APR rod bolts. Also while its apart you should strengthen the engine as well with APR bolts double roll timming chain etc. BUT.... Another route you may want to consider is that a complete brand new long block LS6 engine that could be had for around 5k from GM partsdirect.com. So you may want to consider that as well. Good luck

It could just be a really crappy PCV system. Try the diy PCV catch can kit. It's like $25, it will catch oil, and it may even save you from an expensive unneccessary re-ring job.

Another thing to consider is if you might want to sell the car in the future. You should all so consider a transmission upgrade starting around 400 RWHP. You could keep your stock motor and start buying parts for a stroker or H/C.

Rebuildable core LS1 motor $1000-1500
6.0 truck block $500-800
Stroker Kit $2,500-6000
Rebuild $750-2000
Heads 1500-3000
Cam $350
Pulling and reinstall motor $1500

Maybe some of this will help. I just thought you might want to consider this if you plan to sell the car and don't want to loose all the money you put into mods, or have someone want to get your car really cheap because you moded it. It's also nice to have a back up.
Good luck
