It seems that you could disable the CAGS just by simply unplugging the wires to the switch on the side of the transmission and securing them with a wire-tie. Why is it necessary to spend $30-$60 on the "kit"? What exactly does the kit do?
You can simply unplug it, but you will have to put up with the "check engine" light constantly lit on the dash resulting from the P0803 code caused by the PCM detecting the inoperative solenoid.
The bypass kit serves 2 functions. It gives the proper resistance value so that the PCM thinks the solenoid is connected and working properly. It also weatherproofs the connector while disconnected.
If you want to bypass CAGS without buying this, you can also pick up a simple 50 cent 1.8k ohm resistor at Radio Shack and plug it into the wiring harness connector and tape it up very well. This will serve to mirror the resistance of the tranny solenoid and fool the PCM as the bypass kit does.
Or, you could also go even cheaper yet, and just learn to not shift before 2000rpm.

I used about 3" of bicycle inner tubing (thin tire) placed it over the unplugged plug (after inserting the resistor) and then folded it over securing everything with a zip tie. It is a lot neater than electrical tape and doesn't come loose. The I zip tied the flopping pieces to a non moving frame member.

Installing a CAGS bypass kit is not the only way of bypassing CAGS. You can ( and I have ) disabled CAGS via a small update to the PCM. Much cleaner this way..

I would guess that this prevents the light from illuminating too doesn't it?
Corvettes of Houston's price is $15.95 + shipping.
Folks, knowledge is power (and sometimes money). It's just a 30 cent resistor. Anyone who paid more than 6 bucks (1 for the resistor / 5 bucks for the factory connector) paid way too much. Don’t get me started about CLB's either.. There is around 45 bucks in profit on that one..
