Default More Headlight Problems HELP!!!

About a year ago the gear teeth on my drivers side headlight motor broke so I ordered a replacement gear (brass instead of plastic) and went through the process of repairing the motor. No real problems since then except.

Those stupid plastic stops (bushings??) There are 4 on each headlamp assembly. One of the clips on the driver side lamp seems to get crushed/dented and therefore I can only open and close the lights 3 or 4 times before the dent becomes bad enough to cause the winky blinky headlight problem. I have been rotating the other 7 clips into this position since it only seems to be a problem for the one headlight.

Questions, First does anyone know where I can buy replacement clips and how much they cost before I go to the dealer and have to offer my first born to buy them. Second is it possible to adjust the force that the headlight open and close with?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is an existing Service Bulletin on the white plastic tabs on the driver's side headlight. Due to the motor assembly being slightly off on the driver's side, the stops make contact with the assembly slightly closer to the tip than it should, resulting in the stop eventually breaking off and the headlight failing to stay closed.

The bulletin required that the headlight motor be shimmed with a few washers and new stops installed. It's not too difficult as a DYI job.

The bulletin kit containing the washers and new stops was relatively cheap - somewhere around $12 if my memory serves me right adn you can get from the dealer. This service bulletin came out either in 2000 or 2001.

I found the Service Bulletin Info:

#00-08-42-002
Technical Bulletin - Left Headlamp Door Does Not Stay Closed
(Shim Headlamp Door Motor/Actuator and Replace Insulators)

2000 Chevrolet Corvette

Condition

Some customers may comment that the left front headlamp door does not remain closed after the headlamps are turned off. Others may comment that the left headlamp door closes when the headlamps are turned off, but then reopens. In either case, the right headlamp door operates properly.

Correction

Important

The following information applies to the left front headlamp door motor/actuator only. It does not apply to and should not be performed on the right front headlamp door motor/actuator.

Install one washer (2) between the left headlamp door motor/actuator (1) and the mounting bracket (3) at each of the three attaching bolt locations. Also replace the insulator (4) on each of the two mounting bracket travel stop tabs (5) as shown. For information on headlamp motor/actuator removal, see the Headlamp Motor/Actuator Replacement procedure in the Lighting sub-section of Body & Accessories in the appropriate Service Manual.

Parts Information

Part Number Description Qty Per Vehicle
11505463 Washer 3
16524060 Insulator 2

Parts are expected to be available from GMSPO, 6/15/00.

I have also heard it is a "good idea" to replace the stock gears with brass.
Is this hard to do? Necessary for an '04?
Where'd you get the gears?
Thanks

Thank you so much for the info. I went to the dealer today and got the parts ($12.75) I'll install them if the rain ever stops. Thank you again for all the help.

As for the brass gears. I found them on Ebay ($20 each) Took me less than 2 hours to complete the swap per side. Actually the first one took 2 hours (including 30 minutes for the glue to dry) the other side took less than 2 hours. Assuming you are pretty handy and aren't afraid to take things apart this is a pretty easy task. Most of the time I took was due to my wanting to make sure I didn't drop anything or scratch anything.

Good Luck

Sorry for the delayed response I've been away.

I was able to find the Ebay person that I bought the gear from. Here is a link to his auction.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33710

He is selling just the gear, which is what I bought.

The stops as far as I can tell are only available at the dealer. I would be very happy to find out I am wrong since GM things that those dopey plastic parts are worth $15.00 (ea)

As for the stops and the other parts that I got at the dealer. Here is the info.

The service bulletin is
#00-08-42-002
Technical Bulletin - Left Headlamp Door Does Not Stay Closed
(Shim Headlamp Door Motor/Actuator and Replace Insulators)

The dealer can look it up based on that info.

The part numbers for what you need to fix the left headlamp are as follows.
11505463 Washer 3 of them
16524060 Insulator 2 of them

I hope this helps. Good Luck.
