So while under my getting doing the header install I noticed my rear diff is wet on the left (driver's) side. I said.. oh here's the dreaded diff leak. So I looked up the Chevy TSB but it talks about the RIGHT side. Nothing about the left side.
So my questions are:
1) Are others having the LEFT side of the diff leak?
2) Are the gaskets easy to repair?
3) Does the diff need to be removed to fix it?
As you can probably guess I am out of warrenty and the stealership isn't my favorite place to go with the car if I can avoid it.
It is usually the driver's side that leaks. No you don't have to remove the differential. I did mine myself in a few hours and used anerobic sealant on the outside flange as a backup to the o-ring. Been dry ever since. You just need to remove the driver's side half-shaft and muffler assembly. Once those are out of the way you can remove the side cover and replace the seal and o-ring.

Really?? The TSB I found kept talking about the RH side. I assumed that was passenger. Maybe not. Pardon the ignorance. Few more questions.
Is there an update gasket set to use?
Any special tools needed?
What kind of "anerobic sealant" did you use. Like an RTV Silicon?
I just had mine done this week both sides and I got GM to pay for the repair 100%.
So call GM and complain to them about the leak and tell them that there's a lot of forum members with the same problem, that's what I did and they paid.

Thanks!

Do a search for anerobic sealer. There is an updated o-ring, you should get it by default if you order the part. THe only two special tools are a pickle fork and a prybar. Use the pickle fork to separate the ball joint, and use the pry bar to pop the half-shaft out of the side of the diff. If you're not mechanically inclined you should probably take it and have it done.
