15 w50 in a heavier weight oil. it is mostly use for excessive duty and long term high heat use, like road racing where oil temps are sustained above 240 for long periods of time, 20 plus minutes.
Give your car a few minutes to warm up and get the oil temp over 80 before you drive anywhere. This is not really a cold weather oil, but you are in Cal i 4 nigh eee ahhh - so you should be ok.
the mobil 1 web site does a good job explaining the differences.
I use 15-w50 and have for several changes now. My car spends more time on the track then on the street.
I just changed my oil with 15-50 Mobil 1
i always go with 5-30 but this time i went a different direction
Will i be Ok?
Whants the difference?
thanks
As AU N EGL explained above, it is a heavier oil. In normal duty, your engine may experience more friction loss due to the heavier weight oil, and you may see higher oil pressure, but flow will probably be lower. None of these will hurt the motor, especially in CA in the summer. I'd recommend switching back to a 5w30 in the winter though.
I use AMSOIL Series 2000 20w50 in my car, which sees almost exclusive track use in the hot MidWest summers.
