My Mom got a 04 for her 60th anniversary. Last week they noticed a leak at the rear of the car and took it to GM for service. They said that the differential was leaking out the vent. Has anyone else had this happen?
I checked for any recalls on the 04 but none apply to the diff. I have a C4 and I don't know a lot about the C5 so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately this is a very common problem, but it can be delt with as long as you have some patience. I also have an 04 Coupe and I just had my third visit to fix this problem. There is a TSB out on this. Your dealer needs to replace the seal, that is what they did on mine the first time (at 2000 miles).
Two thousand miles later it strated leaking again. This time they said it was a lose bolt that they tightened. It still leaked when I got it home that night. Next visit they replaced the seal and used some form of sealer to keep it from leaking. Only time will tell if this works.
In addition to the seal, others have had trouble with the differential being overfilled and getting a leak out the overflow tube.

If the seal must be replaced be sure to insist that they use the special anaerobic sealant on the case and side plate, otherwise the sucker will (probably) leak again!

Bill:
It is time for you to get a rebuilt diffy from DTE. They don't leak.
If it's leaking out of the vent, shouldn't be a problem. Probably overfilled at the factor. I had a new Chevy truck and Toyota spew fluid from the dif vents. Once the excess oil blew out, every thing was fine.

My dealer told me the same thing. I then informed them that I checked the top of the Diff. and it was dry. They fixed the Diff. leak under warranty. Still holding at this point.
This is a desease that GM should have been fix a long time ago. I had an 04 Coupe and it has a differential leak. But because it's a Vette, GM tend to ignore the consumer. Quality??
I was able to get it up on a lift and take a good look at where the
oil was comming from. It is comming out of the vent at the top of
the differetial. Took it to GM and they lowered the lub level to about
1/8-1/4" below the fill plug. We aill just have to wait to see if that
takes care of the lub comming out the vent.
