My oil, trans and coolant temps are always close. In stop and go traffic they all climb into the 225-230 range. That makes sense considering the turn on temp for the fan is in that range. On the highway the temps are all near the thermostat opening temp.
My A4 Tranny Temp use to regularly go to 220 F after a hard pull. I had a Tranny Cooler installed last month with a H/C pkg. w/ 160 Deg Stat and fan settings reset to come on earlier. Tranny temp now stays around coolant temp or 170 to 180 even under enthusiastic driving. I've seen 200 once on the Tranny Temp after three back to back 1/4 miles runs - happily all in the mid 12's.
I've heard that it will give you a warning when the tranny temp gets really hot; I think 235+ or 240+. With a 3.73 diff and a 3500 stall t/c, I've seen my tranny get in the low 230's. Casually driving down the highway, it is in the 210's with that setup.

Where did you buy the tranny cooler, and how difficult was it to install the cooler?

Had the Tranny cooler installed by 21st Century Muscle Car in Dallas,TX area at the same time I had the H/C pkg anf Torque Converter installed. It is larger than most coolers I have seen. Looks about 12"x18" and mounts against the front of the radiator -sorry I don't know the brand name. They had to weld some fittings on the fluid lines and cut openings in the radiator shroud to fit the lines through. With the engine out, the install looked easy . Seriously, I think installing wouldn't be too bad for a wekend project - getting the right fittings and plumbing would be the most difficult I think- but this is from a guy that had the pros do it!
