I read a post where someone put the blackwing on and it took about 100 miles of driving for the computer to learn/adjust to the new air flow pattern ...is this true or is it just
and also if you unhook the neg on the battery as the instructions state...does that have any effect on the computer other than the radio...another person said that the coolant sensor went nuts for a while after the blackwing was installed and the battery was hooked back up .....but the problem went away after a day of driving... ..whats that all about?..I'm getting scared to even do anything to mine...may have a mechanic at the dealership I know do it so incase anything malfunctions he can fix it there...
Appreciate any and all comments....
Yes, drive the car around about 100 miles to get the PCM to relearn itself with new found air flow. no need to disconnect the battery since your not working with anythng electrical. you can do it yourself in 15min.
save your money
I did the install myself, very simple and only took about 20 minutes. I have had mine on for about 100 miles and no problems at all. Go for it, it's easy.
Thanks...I still don't understand about the computer having to relearn something...would the dealer/mechanic reprogram the computer without the computer having to relearn it by itself with the addition of the blackwing?...This is the tech section right?...any technical answers here?...Thanks
My understanding is the computer is always adjusting and calculating info via sensors.(MAF, O2 etc) It just takes approx. 100 miles for it to completely "learn" that it is getting more air and adjust properly.
I disconnected the battery on my 03 Coupe when I did the install about a month ago, I did not have to reprogram anything, not even the radio station presets.
The computer is constantly adjust the fuel trims to optimize performance so the learning period it undergoes after the Blackwing install is normal and pretty transparent to you, the driver. You may or may not notice a difference in the feel of the car afterwards, depending on how sensitive your SOTP-meter is.
Don't sweat the install - it's probably one of the easiest mods you can do on the car. Unhooking the battery is optional, IMO. Also, to help the computer along, do an idle relearn immediately after the install to get the ball rolling. This is separate from the relearn it will do once you start driving it.
Idle Relean Procedure
Automatic Transmission:
1 Turn off the ignition
2 Restore the PCM battery feed
3 Turn Off the AC controls
4 Set the parking brake and block the drive wheels
5 Start the engine
6 Allow the engine coolant temperature to reach 176 degrees F
7 Shift the transmission selector into the drive range
8 Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes
9 Turn on the AC controls (Omit for 2000-01 model)
10 Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes (Omit for 2000+ model)
11 Shift the transmission selector into Park
12 Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes (Omit for 2000+ model)
13 Turn off the AC controls (Omit for 2000+ model)
14 Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes
15 Turn off the engine for 15 seconds
Manual Transmission:
1 Turn Off the ignition
2 Restore the PCM battery feed
3 Turn Off the AC controls
4 Set the parking brake and block the drive wheels
5 Transmission in neutral
6 Start the engine
7 Allow the engine coolant temperature to reach 176 degrees F
8 Turn on the AC controls (Omit for 2000+model)
9 Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes (Omit for 2000+model)
10 Turn off the AC controls (Omit for 2000+ model)
11 Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes
12 Turn off the engine for 15 seconds
Patches, in the Auto Trans relearn process, Step 15 says "Turn off the engine for 15 seconds." Why do you have to turn the car off for 15 seconds? Is there another step (Step 16) in this process? Or should Step 15 just say "Turn off the engine."?
I believe that time delay is a timeout to make sure the values that are set during the relearn are stored. After 15 seconds, you can restart the engine and it will idle fine.
When I installed my h/c, new TB and a few other pieces, the car initially idled like crap, stumbling and surging like mad. I did the idle relearn and it ran great after that.
BTW, my battery died last night (these AGM batteries truly give NO warning), and upon replacing it today everything appears to be fine. I have done no special "learning" and the car is running fine.
Now that you have the Blackwing in and running, pull it out and get a Vararam. That's exactly what I am going to do. It is real important to get the coldest air possible in to the MAF and that's what I am going for. The Blackwing is going to go.
Not really sure why you have to disconnect the battery for the install. I assume there is a reason. I did NOT when I installed mine and did not have any issues.

Update...I just installed mine today and I didn't unhook the battery and no issues either...it may be that if it takes you too long to install, it will run down the battery..thats what I'm thinking anyway...

btw its an '04 with 850 miles on the ticker...
I have disconnected my battery many times inn the courrse of doing mods. I have never had an issue. As far as the car "learning" The Blackwing, it does take a little while but you are going to be mighty impressed with the seat of the pants impact your going to feel almost immediatly. The only problem with the corvette out of the factory is that it doesn't breath worth a damn. The Blackwing and the Vara-Ram solve that issue quite nicely and in my opinion, it is the best dollar for HP bolt on you can buy. I would also suggest a smooth coupler and a highflow airbridge.
