It looks like I need to replace my steering position sensor. (error C1287H). I've searched the threads, and have not found much about doing this. It appears at the base of the steetring column there is a donut type sensor with some wires coming out of it. Can I assume this is it? Does anybody know how the steps to repair and replace this?
Yes, that is it. You have to pull the column out to change it. Be careful not to let the steering wheel spin or you will snap the air bag ribbon on the inside and it is like $100 for the ribbon. You could do it in a couple of hours.
Mine threw that code after periods of non-use, and it appears the contacts sometimes get dirty..........it's $500+ at a dealer, so I drove the car around for a week or two, and it finally stopped showing.
I've also read if you turn the wheel from right to left lock a few times, it will clean them, if that's what the problem is....best of luck
Thanks for the advice. I'll first try driving it more. It is kind of a hanger queen, and it sat in my garage on blocks for over six months while I was in Iraq. $500 sounds high, but not too bad if they do it right, don't smash it up, and take care of it. That's my concern. I can do a lot of work myself, and I'll look into changing the sensor myself if it's not too bad.
The dealer I bought it from is over an hour away and has top notch mechanics, but finding a dealer in the Annapolis Maryland area that has a clue is the trick.
