Last night as I took off from a light, something very bad occurred with either my clutch, rear end, or trans all together. The car made a pop and then while still in gear the revs just went to the sky with the car going nowhere. Tried 2nd gear, 3rd, 4th...etc...even reverse. Nada. The car won't go in anywhere in any gear and there is a slight rattling noise coming from the general direction of the trans tunnel. Checked the 150 feet or so that my car made it before I pulled over, but there were no parts so if the diff grenaded it all stayed in there.
Granted - and I looked at your sig before answering but still it's still possible with your 422. The tranny output is also a possibility - I've read of that happening here. I did a drivetrain removal with a buddy recently and looking at the spline engagement on the shafts, it appeared as if they could be overcome with enough power and traction.
The thing I don't really understand is that I didn't take off that hard. I was just sort of slipping out the clutch and wham! Can you visually verify any of this without tearing apart the trans? And got any idea what it would take to replace the tranny output and the how much it would cost if that was it?
If it's the output shaft, you might be able to turn the wheel with the car jacked up. It's easy to pop the axle shaft off from the diff to verify it also. Pull the wheel and brake caliper, unbolt the two upper A-arm bolts and two upper shock mount bolts and pull the axle shaft away from the diff.
This is the passenger side pulled off.
And here's the axle shaft inboard end pulled out of the diff. It has an internal spline that fits over the diff output shaft spline.
This is the diff driver-side output shaft. This is a DTE hardened shaft.
Darn Dave, hurry up and get that fixed!! Who am I going to battle with at Milan?? If you need help or anything let me know.
I know, talk about timing. Probably weakened something at Norwalk the day before last. Arg. I'm gonna see if Agostino or DTE can somehow squeeze me in before the 30th. Fingers crossed!
It's impossible to know judging by the fact that you have no evidence
Dope
I know, that's what sucks. Can't see any apparent damage. Gonna go throw it on the stands tonight and see if I can't see anything. Those pictures patches put up are excellent.
You can probaly figure most of it out by checking you fluids. Sounds like a pinion gear to me. I would think if it was a output shaft the car would pull a little bit becasue of the limited slip. But maybe not.
good luck
We also have 94 Sunoco here in PA. I run it in my Vette, 954RR, and used to run it in my 20lb boosted Eclipse. Seems to run great for me. Havent had a problem yet. HOPEFULLY it was just the switch to the new gas. Darroch Malone
