Default Oil psi question

Today I was driving and took off fast in first and shifted at the rev, same for second and third, and I noticed once I started to slow down from 105 mph that my oil psi was past 80psi, is that normal? I got a stock 2000 Frc.

What was you oil temperture? Oil pressure can go way up on a cold engine taken to red line. Not a real good idea. Look for about 150 deg F before running hard.

For a check look for oil pressure to be at about 35 to 40 psi with the oil at 210 deg f and the car at 1500 RPM 6th gear cruise.

most likely it was reporting incorrecly. Some have had bad sensors they had to replace.

Default Check it with just the key on.

If you switch on the key, before cranking the engine, a bad sending unit will usually cause the oil pressure needle to immediately go to 40 and then climb, sometimes all the way to 80, and sit there.
There have been several threads on this, and Patches gave a tech drawing (showing sensor location) and AC Delco part number on a thread about a month ago.
Timing is everything. Mine went out, the same day it was posted.

I don't think 5 minutes is enough time to get the oil to 180+. Mine takes at least 10 minutes in TX during the summer from a cold start.

My guess is that the oil was cold and therefore showed 80psi. It is most likely nothing to worry about. A bad gage usually will read full pressure all of the time.

If that was the first drive of the day (engine cooled down overnight), I seriously doubt you could you could get much above 100 degrees in 5 minutes. I think you're OK, especially if the pressure bled back down to 30-40 psi after the insanity!

If it stayed at 80, then I'd look at the sensor.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike
