I just completed my h/c install and while I had the engine apart I replaced the timing chain and installed a ported oil pump. I took the car for a test drive and everything is great. The only potential problem is the gauge reads low oil temperature.
Does the ported oil pump keep the oil cooler and if so is this a good thing? Why does the gauge tell me low oil temp in stead of just reading the temp.
LOW OIL TEMP will be displayed on the DIC when the temperature measured is below somewhere around 16F. Since that's not likely the case, it sounds like your connector to the oil temp sensor may be either open or short - one of those conditions will simulate a low temp reading.
What temp is it reading?? Under normal conditions warm the oil up to at least 80 degrees F before driving. and 100 degrees before any hard driving. Even though hard driving will get oil temp well above 200 real fast.
I'm not near my service manuals, but I believe it's somewhere near the rear of the oil pan near the bottom of the block. I believe the oil pump is in that area just above the filter (not sure here) but if that's the case the oil temp sensor may have been moved or touched during your work and resulted in this state.

Your oil is still too cold at 100 degrees to do any serious hard driving. Wait until 150 at the absolute minimum, although waiting until 180 is definitely preferable.
I took the car to the dealship and they told me when the headers were installed, they tore the wires apart. $200 later it is fixed. Now I have to go back to the company that installed the headers and try to get them to pay up.

Patman, I agree with you once the oil temp gets up to 100 ppl start driving the car, then the oil temp gets up to 150-180 real fast.
Too many ppl go crazy onece the sit in the car and turn it on, and whamm they are hard at it. Let the car oil and collent temps warm up.
