I am about to acquire a Z06 lid to put on my C5. How much of the Air Box do I need? Will the lid fit in the base of the C5 box. Basically are just the lids interchangeable. Yes, I have seen the mods that can be done for lids and yes I already have an aftermarket breather. I am doing an experiment so as he says on "Braveheart" in my best Irish accent, "Just answer the freakin (explitive in movie) question." Thanks guys and gals. Also, for those who have painted the plastic pieces under the hood. Where are the instructions for painting those dudes. Is is as simple as scrubbing with soap and water, ruffing it with sand paper and spraying it with flexible plastic bumper primer?
The Z06 lid will fit on your existing air box. The lids are interchangable. The '02 and up Z06 lids flow more air than the '01. I'd say about 4x more than the stock C5 lid. I have an '04 Z06 lid on my '97. You can tell the difference from stock. Now I am upgrading further to a Haltech Stinger.
As others have said, all you need is the upper air box. I have that on mine, and dremelled out the opening for more airflow too. I honestly don't know how the stock LS1 airbox gets any airflow at all, it looks to be completely sealed with no openings at all.
The swap is real easy, once you take it all apart you can basically figure it out.
I picked up 8rwhp on the dyno with this mod, although admittedly I also changed to fresh plugs at the same time, and my old plugs were giving me 7 degrees of KR while the new ones gave me zero. So it's possible the plugs gave me most of the horsepower gain. But you can really hear the engine breathe better at full throttle now with this airbox on it.
I think that I might understand the "how to" question since I did this last week and spent about 20 minutes staring at the two connectors at the bottom wondering how to remove them...
There are just studs that pop through the two rubber grommets at the bottom. Just apply a little pressure and they will come out pretty easily.
I was feeling around for a bolt or something and could not find anything. Out of frustration I gave it a little tug and it came off. Seems simple enough but if you've never done it before it might not be completely obvious.
Look at IAMQUIK's post and at the bottom of his red cover are two black gromets. Those two gromets and the two gromets on the air bridge are the only things (other than the accordian tube hose clamp) that hold the air filter assembly in!
My recommendation would be to remove the air bride accordian tube hose clamp from the throttle body, pry the air air bridge from the radiator shroud rubber gromets and pry the air filter assembly off the two studs on the front frame rail that fit into the rubber gromets on the air box cover.
Once those attachment points are disconnected, all you have left is to unplug the MAF and disconnect the hose on the side of the filter.
Lift the entire assembly out and service the filter (add a K&N filter) install your ZO6 cover and reinstall the assembly in reverse order!
I lubricate the studs on the front bulkhead with silicone spray or some WD-40 to allow it to slip on easy.
Trying to service it inplace is crazy! If you need any more help, please let me know.
My car did not show any error codes after installing the Z06 airbox lid. I also installed a K&N filter at the same time. The engine sounded a little better but I couldn't really say if I felt a difference in performance. Made me feel better at least!
After you install the Z06 air box lid will the car show any error codes because of more airflow? LT
You won't get any codes, don't worry about that. I would like to suggest you pull the #16 and #23 fuses out of the under hood fuse box while you do the lid swap. This will allow your pcm to reset and when you start it back up the re-learn process will be quicker.
(You really don't need to buy a zo6 lid, just hole saw the stock box, it works great.)
And where did you purchase that weatherstripping? Looks like it fills the bill nicely. I like the placement, too, as it appears it isn't visible when the hood is closed.

TIA for your response.
I got it at Autozone and you are right, it is totally unseen when the hood is closed. I TRIED to get water past it the other day with the hose and it stayed totally dry behind that seal. Very good stuff indeed.
I replaced the entire stock air box (cover and base) on my 98 C5 with an entire 2002-2004 Z06 air box (cover and base). Before installing the Z06 air box, I compared it to the stock LS1 air box and found that the passages on the back of the Z06 air box (between the cover and the base) were much larger than that of the stock LS1 air box.
Therefore, it is evident that the air flow increase of the 2002-2004 Z06 air box over that of a 1997-2000 LS1 air box is not solely attributable to the opening in the 2002-2004 Z06 air box cover.
2001-2004 LS1's have different air boxes than 1997-2000 LS1's. Therefore, I cannot say whether or not a total air box replacement on a 2001-2004 LS1 would be as beneficial as it is on a 1997-2000 LS1.

Just did the same thing, great mod, nice job, works well for 15 bucks.
Just make sure to prep the surface so the gluw will stick good.
