I like Mobil 1 beacause you can get it at any Kmart or Walmart. I have heard a lot of good things about amsoil, but you have to order order it or try and find a dealer. Just my .02
You will have less oil loss with Amsoil. Amsoil is has more viscosity than Mobil-1 at 100 degrees C, 11.7 vs. 10 for Mobil-1. Mobil-1 is right on the edge of being a 20W oil at 100 degree C. If you want an oil that you can get locally, but want more viscosity, consider the German Castrol 0W-30. I am running that in all my cars right now, it is a great oil. Available at Autozone, make sure it states "Made in Germany" on the back of the bottle.
I've been running the German Castrol 0w30 in my cars for a while now, and when I got my C5 in August, I immediately switched it over too. It's working out very well so far, I've already gone 4500 miles on this oil and the dipstick shows no oil consumption at all. I've got no piston slap either. I've seen very low engine wear in my oil analysis results in other cars, so I'm anxious to see how it does in my C5. I will have the first oil analysis results from this car in about 10 days.
I have used amsoil in all my vehicles since 1995. I have never had any engine related problems. I own a garage and Amsoil is used in all the fleet vehicles. Some now have over 400k. Still going strong.
My vettes are getting Amsoil!

Don't fry me, I'm just showing you a link. I really DOn't think Mobile pays GM anything, but I'd be willing to bet that maybe GM gets free or darn near free oil for their cars.

I already buy multiple cases of Amsoil at a time so for me, getting it is as easy as walking to my storage shed.
I have asked the Synthetic vs Synthetic question before on other sites and it's interesting that choice of oil is like a religion to some people. Unfortunately, hard facts are difficult to find. Like it said in the link, many studies seem to be financed directly or indirectly by one of the oil companies.
Since I'm only going to change the oil about once a year (I only will drive 1-3,000 miles a year), it probably won't make much difference which brand I go with.
If anyone else has any comments or links to studies I'd like to know and I'll bet others would too.
If you are really interested in oil testing and results, take a trip to Bobistheoilguy.com where there are many oil analyses shared and reviewed. There is a lot of information on that site, not only on oil, but filters (air and oil) too.
Yep it's good oil for the price but a guy can do a bit better these days if he's willing to pick up the phone to buy oil at 5 bucks a quart the Synergyn 5w-30 synthetic is hell for stout and stays in grade .

Is there any reason to stick with the factory recommended Mobile 1? .....
???? Trick question????
.... any reason...? One reason to stick with the factory recommended Mobile 1 is, well, that is what is recommended by the factory.
Take a look at your Owner's Manual, the requirement is for SAE 5W-30 oil that meets GM Standard GM4718M. If the Amsoil meets that standard, then there should not be a problem.
I've had no problems with Mobile 1. I just didn't see a need to experiment with my Corvette.
