It was an ugly day here in Dallas today..lots of rain..which lead me to using my front winshield defrost for the first time to clear the fog off the window.
When I press the defrost button the A/C button automatically comes on/lights up
I can regulate the temp between warm and cold for the defrost but why does the A/C button light up when I use the defrost button?

Even if you try to override it when starting out on a cold/damp morning, it will keep going until it decides it's time to shut off. Don't you love machines that are smarter than you are?
Most cars have worked this way for years. As others have already stated, if you use the defroster then you want moisture out of the windshield's air, which is what A/C does. Try it on rainy days, your glass will clear faster with heated A/C on.
It is designed into the circuit so in the winter, the ac compressor cycles, to allow refrigerant to be circulated keeping the seals lubricated... if this feature was not designed in.. the seals would shrink, and cause premature failure.

This is not the main reason the A/C comes on with the defrost setting. Remember cars also go to areas of the country without snow or very cold weather.
