I've heard some say that the BW works better when it's a little dirty (does not make sense to me, but I can't argue either way). I cleaned mine when I thought it needed it, first time was about 12k miles. If it looks dirty it more than likely is. Only minor problem I had was that I couldn't get the indicator to fully reset.

later,

I saw an article on the correct way to clean and oil the Blackwing several months ago. The author is a Blackwing distributor, and in his article he stated that; "Unless the vehicle is running up and down the Baja every day, most people will never have to clean their Blackwing filter element for 100,000 miles."

I found that to be quite a profound statement, and coming from a person that sells the Blackwing product, cleaner, and oil.
He also emphasized the importance of not over oiling the filter element.

So based on this, I just check my indicator every time I'm under the hood, so far it's still green after nearly 15,000 miles after installation. Just to make certain the indicator wasn't stuck green, I had a friend watch while I revved the engine a couple of times, he noted that the indicator moved slightly, but never left the green area. That satisfied me on that issue.
