OK....I have a 97 with over 65,000 and on the way to work this morning I received warning lights and message stating "service ABS" and "service traction control"? I am women with out a clue how much trouble am I in here and is the car safe to drive? YIKES!
As long as you are not going fast, cornering hard, or driving in rain, you're not in any danger (though it would still be a good idea to take care of it ASAP). Those are the times the AH/TC engage.
Now, a couple of questions... 1. Have you had any word done recently that involved disassembling the console (near the TC button)? If so, it might just be that the wires are shorted together or slipped off one of the connectors on the backside. 2. Have you had the tires replaced recently, and if so, were they the same size as what you had before (when everything was fine)? You have to maintain an OD size ratio between front & rear (with the larger size in the rear). If they are the same size (or the difference is too little) the computer detects this as constant slippage, and will disable AH/TC.
Thanks for the reply.....the weather was sunny and for once I wasn't driving too fast. I will say that about 4 weeks ago I was rear-end by a Range Rover (that was fun) not too much damange and the rear tires had NO contact. Is it possible that this accident created this problem?
Just had the "Electronic Brake Contro Unit" (EBCM) replaced on my '02, as I had the same messages that you describe (along with Service Active Handling).
The part was back ordered so the kept the car since last Thursday even though I had driven it that way since that Monday.

Hard to say, but yeah, it's possible.
I know you don't want to hear this (especially since your '97 is out of warranty), but I think it's time to have a professional look at it. If you filed a police report on the accident, you can probably still file a claim with your insurance company. Bring it somewhere trustworthy, get an estimate, and then make your decision. If you don't know where to go, post the question on the regional forum for your area (i.e., from the Forums drop-down at the top of each page in the forums: Forums > Events & Regional).
I do have a GREAT dealer here that has a great "Vett" guy there who so far has been helpful. I have been fighting with the insurance company for weeks. Since the damage appeared to be minor they don't "get it"!
I had a similar situation a few weeks ago and what seemed to cause it is that I drove a short way with the e-brake mistakenly engaged. After releasing the brake and the next time I started the car all the messages appeared about servicing ABS and Active Handling. I shut the car down again and all the messages disappeared.
