What I do is cut off the old material with decal on it. (whether metal or fiberglass) Take a heat gun (on low) and gently heat the outside (very lightly), then start to heat the backside of the medium that the decal is stuck to.
Very rarely does it not work. It's VERY time consuming. If you hurry and pull too much, too hard or unevenly, you will either tear or distort the sticker.
If you don't think you are capable of doing it. Cut off the piece of old metal or fiberglass and send it to me, I'll do it for you.
Usually, when done, I stick it back on with 3M's adhesive tape. If it isn't smooth, I'll mount it to the new panel and clear right over it.

Time is the word. Most techs are working hard to make book time. So they don't have the patients or feel the need to do the tidious task.

Rick, I agree. Since I own the shop, it's the little extras like that make us stand out from other bodyshops. I don't have any of the guys do it, I do it myself so I know it'll be done right.
I have an easier way.At my shop,I cut the plate off the door and copy it on the copier machine.I then lay in on lamination which is a little bigger than the vin sticker and stick it back onto the inside of the door.Looks just like factory!

Yep! I feel the same way. I always try to do something extra in every job I do. I do quality work, sometimes it hurts me though because I spend more time on something then I should. But I want my customers to be happy.

I agree with MyblueC5. You can heat the sticker and transfer it. I work at a Lexus dealership and we can get replacement stickers from Lexus. Not sure about a GM product.
