Am looking at a 2000 model C5, with about 80 k miles on it - this will be my second Vette if I buy it - the body is almost perfect, great for a 4 year old car that has been obviously driven a lot. It is somewhat of a fixer-uper - the inside is in better than good but not great condition - and under the hood the belt squeaks and needs replacing. The car has the magnesium wheel option and selective ride control, HUD - 12 disc changer - pretty much optioned out pewter coupe with a 6-speed manual tranny. $19.8k is the asking price. THis is the first C5 under $20k I have found that the looks - inside and out - were this good. I can drive this car and it will look as good as many newer cars. Engine seems good - no smoke, no noises, (except for the belt) and clean oil (course it could have just been changed). Drove it and clutch seems fine. I am thinking about making an offer of $16.5K and see if we can get it at a really good price. Of course, there is one issue - the A/C. So this is not a performance question, but maybe someone can help me out if you've been there and done that. THe controls for the A/c venting don't work. it seems to be stuck in an in between mode and you push the "mode" button that would ordinarily switch between the defrosting vent and the a/c vent and the heating vents on the floor - nothing happens. I hear the fan blowing, but no air through the a/c vents - I can feel some leaking out under the dash and some out att the window, but that's it. I can change the speed of the fan, reset the temp, etc., without any problem. I think this is a vacuum actuated device but admit that I know nothing about what's under the dash. Any thoughts on what it might be and is it something I would have to have a dealer fix??
There is a Vacuum fitting on the very back of the intake manifold! It is a BITCH to get to BUT must be properly connected to make the AC/Heat HVAC work properly! If the vacuum is missing the sysyem defaults to the defrost vent!
There are a couple of thinge that could cause a loss of vacuum:
1. The hose is off on the back of the manifold. See picture:

2. There was a battery acid spill/leak from the battery. This is a VERY common problem on C5's with the old lead acid delco batteries. When the acis leaks, it drips on the wiring harness, PCM and TAC module. Inside the wiring harness is the vacuum lines. They DO NOT do well with acid! I would remove the battery and check for any evidence of an acid spill. There is a removable panel behind the passengers wheel in the wheel area. You can remove that and inspect everything.
