Dealership had to replace my auto trans three weeks ago in my 98. Question: I will be replacing my rear end from 315 to 342, should I go ahead and change the torque converter, if so what kind? and what should the converter cost?

Install a good high stall T/C at the same time you swap gears and save on labor. A good high stall T/C will really wake your A4 up. Which T/C to select depends on your plans for your car. If you are not planning to do heads and cam and you want near stock driveabilty. The Yank 3000 or 3200 are good choices, if you want more stall the Yank SS3600 is a great choice. I would go with the 3600 because if you later decide to do H/C you would have a converter with enough stall. Vigilante also makes a good T/C, I would recommend their 2800 (which really stalls at 3200) or their 3200 which really stalls at 3600. A new Yank costs about 800.00-900.00 depending on which one you select. The Vigilante costs about 700.00 new. Check the C5 Parts For Sale forum you can sometimes find a good deal on a used T/C.

if you install a looser converter, install a cooler. loose equals heat, heat equals bad news for a4

I can highly recommend the Vigilante 3200. It's been everything I've needed so far.

If you plan on doing any high performance activities, and since your original tranny didn't last with your recent(?) driving habits(presumption)...I would go ahead and do the tranny cooler, regardless. It will help the tranny last longer.

Vigilante gives you one free restall to a stall speed of your choice. If this converter still has the free restall warranty it isn't a bad deal. Because they will inspect the converter when they take it apart to restall it. However I would try and get the converter for a bit less than 499.00 if possible.
