After burning off what was left on my rear tires at the autoX this weekend, I am replacing my Goodyear EMTs with new run-flats. Please, I don't want to argue the whats and whys of going with EMTs. I have a wife who drives this car when I'm out of town, and I'm not going to risk having her stranded. I have looked and read, and studied. It's hard to clear all the chaff away and get to solid info. I am looking for the a tire with these attibutes. I know everything is a trade off so I have ranked the importance. I will NOT be racing on these tires, I'm getting a second set for autox.
From what I've read here in the past, most of the RF handled and were quieter than the GY's. The tread off for the softer compounds that gave the better performance of the other tires, is that they were only good for 50 miles at 0 pressure where the GY are good for 200 miles. I would take that into consideration and have if I decide to stay with RF in the spring for me. The Pilot's and Yokohama's rated the best with the Kuhmo's being the best bang for the dollar.

I have the Kuhmo MX runflats. They handle more like a traditional tire, ride quality and noise levels are greatly improved over the GY Runflats.
I would not consider the Kuhmos to be an All-Season tire however, so if you have more than the usual California weather (couple weeks a year with some moderate rain) they may not be the tire for you. Since you are planning to run another set of tires for auto-x, just about anything would work.
Try the Kumho ECSTA MX run flats. Tire rack says the out perform the EMT's, which isn't hard, and you won't have to worry about the wife getting stranded. $165 front and $265 rear.
I own a set of run flats, they are just in the attic, never to be used again, so I qualify for this thread, don't I?

Thanks for bringing the question up. I switched from run flats to non-run flats. But as soon as the current tires wear out I'd like to go back. All of the replies are very helpful.

Sure you qualify. I just didn't want to get into a RF vs NRF war.
I have been leaning toward the Kumos for the very reason that I would not have as much invested.
BTB, I have not seen those GY, supposed to be much improved. It has AA wet traction rating, something none of the others have. I don't try to drive in the rain, but it sure seems to catch me on a regular basis. Everytime I drive to Bowling Green or Atlanta I get caught.
I called TireRack and they don't have these yet. Pricey huh?
Thanks to everyone for their replys.

This may be of interest to you. I asked a rep at Khumo about the ability to repair their tire. This was his response.
"Paul, thank you for your interest in KUMHO. Once air pressure is lost, you can run the runflats at a max speed of 55 mph, for 50 miles. As far as repairs are concerned, once the tire is punctured, if you pull over and stop riding on it (like a normal tire) it is repairable (as long as it is in a repairable spot and within the standards of repairing a normal tire). However, if you get a puncture and continue to drive on it, using its runflat capabilities, it is not repairable. Let me know if you have any other questions."
I would like to try the Khumo's based on what I've heard about them, traction, price etc. but the rears have been on back order for awhile. Since I couldn't wait any longer I went with a good deal I found on a stock set of take-offs from an '04 with wheels and sensors.
The only thing I would be worried about with Kumo's is that 50 miles is not that far.
Is the "GY" the new runflat on the new C6 vette? They are supposed to be a better tire for ride - the new vette has a spare as well - I do believe these new tires are still runflats, but I do not know if they are commercially available. Know several with the Michelin runflats and they are highly thought of.

1. DRY traction
2. ride quality
3. noise
I don't care (too much) about price.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Running the Firestone runflats here....no problems.....I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.
I've read a few posts on this forum stating that the Firestone's don't quite have the same dry traction as the GY. What do you guys that have them think about that? It's so subjective. I wish true heads-up tire testing would be done on the different brands/styles.
My opinion is the Firestone RF tires run rings around the GY tires. Had them on my 97 for 3 years. Both wet and dry traction were far superior to the GY EMTs. I ran one DE at Pocono in 2003 where it poured the whole day. You could see the water streaming down the banking in Turn One and the Firestones splashed through the stream like it wasn't there. The GYs would not have responded as well.
