Do any of you sometimes manually shift you're A4? Sometimes I find that It shifts up at some of the worst times (eg: merging onto the interstate when your going 40 and traffic is going 80 ) Just curious if its ok to drop it into 3rd, also manually up-shifting on occasion? I have 3:15's if that helps
Down shifting and up shifting manually is a bad idea especially with a stock tranny. If you are not happy with the way your tranny down shifts take it to someone who has LS1Edit and have them reprogram where your tranny down shifts and upshifts.
What I think is that I wish that thread continued! It sure sounded like P1870 code and I don't believe his downshifting thing has anything to do with his problem. There is something else going on if his tranny temps are at 190 after a short time on the freeway and it is apparant that for whatever reason his TCC is not locking. I dont downshift while driving myself but often when in my little town will leave it in 2nd and when reaching the on ramp go to 3 or D. The TC is a "soft coupling" if you will between the tranny and the engine and should easily be able to absorb the slight shock of a D to 3 downshift at 70mph......

Agreed, I was just curious if putting it in 3rd, getting up to cruising speed and then into OD was ok for the tranny? I dont think I would ever downshift after reading that post because I didnt know if put that much stress on the tranny!
The only time Macinamouth's TCC isn't locking properly is when it's got the DTC set (which inhibits lockup. I'm sure there will be more to come in that thread.) I agree completely with Mitch C's advice, program if you don't like how your tranny shifts. The gear selector is designed to be used for different *driving conditions*, it's not a substitute for a manual shifter.

98SilverVette, if you don't make a habit of it and you don't have the RPM very high before/after the shift you shouldn't be doing too much harm. When I do what you're talking about (which isn't often) I typically try to move from 'D' to '3' when I'm already in third. I want to do that a whole lot less frequently after changing rear axle gears.
