Default Electrical Problems

Hello Corvette People

I don`t visit this C5 section too often but this is my first time to post in the C5 Side to get some help.

My Brother own a 1997 Coupe 6spd and He asked for my help about some electrical problems he is having . here is a short story of what had happend to him .

He came home after a sunday cruse and when he turned off the lights/head lights the lights turned off but the headlights didn`t come down as usual they got stuck opend . after this he turned off the engine and he opened the hood to check for any fuses and all checked good . Then he got inside and try to turn on the lights again and this time the lights came ON but the lights in the radio , A/C controler and the cluster didn`t light up . Only the lights in the headlamp lighted up .

What seems to be the problem , after this incident the headlights got stuck open and the lights in the interior woun`t come On .

Can any one please help

Thanks
Marlon.

Check the headlamp relay. Monted I believe in the underhood fuse panel. Sounds like the contacts are sticking/bad contact patches maybe.

Thanks for your Reply Guys !!

Today I went to check and I cannot find any headlamp relay in the fuse box under the hood , all I did find was 2 fuses that says LT head lamp motor and RT head lamp motor , is there any other fuse box where I can check?? because I didn`t find any !!! If someone is kind he will check on his fuse box and tell me wich relay number is the headlight motor relay !

There is an other thing , when you turn on the lights the rear headlamps stays OFF

Where can I find this problem that the rear lights , cluster lights and head lamp motors stoped working ?!

Please Help .

The head light motors are controlled by a control module located below the passengers head light assembly and it is mounted on the front frame header. That module controls both motors up and down. It could be going bad or it could have bad grounds. The ground connections are located in a connector behind the head light assembly and on top of the frame. Here are pictures of the connectors.

Here pictures of the inside of the plug when it is disassembled.[IMG][/IMG]
Check out the corossion!!!!!

Same plug after a GOOD cleaning!!! [IMG][/IMG]

I had some very serious electrical problems on my 98 and the poor ground issue was 80% of the problems.

As for the interrior lights, if he was in a lighted garage or in day light when he checked the lights there is a sensor in the dash that will keep them from coming on if the ambiant light is bright enough.

Ask him to check the dash lights at night. It could be a dash fuse. I am at work and do not have access to my manuals.

Please let me know if this is still an issue

I think something is getting lost in the translation. What do you mean by "The rear headlights" Are you talking about the "Brake Lights"?

As soon as we get the symptoms nailed down, I will satrt working on the problem.

Please let me know and I will check the manual for you and give you some stuff to check.

Bill

Ok, I think I may have a solution for you. Please remove and check the Instrument Panel Electrical Center fuse box (Passengers foot well), FUSE# 6, It will be labled "PKT/LP. Remove the fuse and check it with an ohm meter. If it is blown, insert another one and check your lights again. If they still do not work check the fuse again. If it blew again, you need to locate the short circuit.

Please let me know how you make out. Your tail lights are fused with your instrument panel lights to alert you that you do not have any tail lights!
