Got my recall but haven't taken it in yet. What do they actually do and is it really nessesary? Thanks!
I can comment only on my own experience. I had the GM "recall fix" done to my '98 A4 well over a year ago. I've had ZERO problems and the steering wheel will NEVER lock up on me (it' impossible). If I had it to do over---I'd certainly do the same thing again...
If the "fix" is done using the correct parts and by people who know what they are doing----you'll not have any problems. I guess it's a chance you'll have to take.....Just my 2 cents....

It sounds to me like the "crucial" aspect here would be "by people who know what they are doing". When my column locked, I stopped at the Chevy dealer and they didn't know what I was talking about, or so they said. Needless to say, I can't even imagine taking my car there for anything.
I thought the aftermarket CLB was only for the M6?
The CLB can be used on M6 or A4 trannies. Since 2001 and newer A4's don't have column locks installed at the factory, obviously, a CLB is not needed.
Some folks who own '97 & '98 C5's have had problems with CLB installations. They get wait 10 seconds, etc. and other codes/info on their DIC, sometimes their cars die after starting. In a few rare cases, due to more seroius problems, the owner's have had to remove their CLB's and take their chances. I guess it's due to the electronics in '97-'98 cars being different than the newer cars. I had a C5 Solutions CLB on my '98 A4 for about 2 years and had only a few minor DIC messages. When the recall fix came out, I opted to go w/ it. It's been well over a year with no DIC messages, ZERO problems PLUS my steering wheel cannot lock up. Good luck w/ what ever you choose to do.
