Default Mounting a Laptop?

Has anyone mounted a laptop in their car? I am looking at buying an old Dell 2100, which is less than an inch thick, and only has a 12" screen. About the smallest footprint I could find. I want to mount this for two purposes:

- mp3s linked to the radio
- HP Tuners software to run the datalog

Here are the approaches I am considering:

- Find someway to mount it in the glovebox with rails that would allow it to slide out.
- Since I have a coupe, some how building some type of swing arm from the trunk over the waterfall area.

- There's always, just the hide it under the seat method.

Has anyone done anything like this before? Just curious on the ideas.

The commercial units mount using the passenger seat front rail bolts (think of the units in the police cars). Jotto is the big brand, but there are others.

For mp3's get an iPod.
For the rest, I believe there's software for PDA's now.

Then you can hide both in the armrest.

Yeah the mp3 issue is easy enough to have an alternative for. However, HP Tuners only makes their software for a laptop. From what I've read on the forum, this is the best tuning software out right now.

I did get the issues resolved, but it required a lot of time with the Dremal and cutting some factory blts down. The results were a very clean setup.

I'd love to see what you did to get the Jotto to work, I don't have the most patience when it comes to forcing something into place.

Well if ou just help me out with my header install you'll get to see it.

Okay, so the install was one of those things that isn't fun the first time, but wouldn't be that tough the second time.

What I did:
- Purchased the Jotto desk made for the Crown Vic/F-Bod, as there isn't one for the C5.
- Took the Dremal and lightly widened the post side hole in the baseplate about 1-2mm
- Drilled out a hole on the other side for the right sided seat rail bolt. The Jotto uses some quality metals, I broke 2 bits trying to get through it, but finally did.

Unfortunately, the seat bolts are recessed, so I purchased a 38mm coupling nut in M10 thread and cut it in half, then cut off the seat tabs and cut down the seat boltsto 1cm from 2cm. This allowed the baseplate to sit flush with the floor.

Here is the final project. I think it looks relatively clean. You can have this in with a passenger, and the passenger can swivel it over to watch a DVD or do work.

That setup looks extremely clean. That's awesome. Guess I'll have to order mine now.

It's a really solid unit. I can't tell you how impressed I was with the materials once I opened the package. Everything is hardened steel (you can see the scrapes where my drill bits collapsed trying to bore through it ), and only the table is plastic...which is good since you want low weight on radius of the lever arm.

I copied all the info on the bolts that you wrote above, and will utilize the same process when I install mine. Thanks for the help.
