Even RIGHT NOW I'm having wheel hop with a 1-2 shift. Shortly my C5 MN6 Z51 is getting a big upgrade: H/C/bolt-ons and probably a 100shot. I'm expecting at least 410rwhp NA and 510rwhp on the juice with 3.90 gears. The only traction/suspension mods my car has is non-runflat tires: I'm going to have SERIOUS traction issues then. There has to be a solution.
I watched a video of a 580rwhp Z06 getting on it from a roll on the street, and the front end of the car did not raise up like other high HP C5's I've seen in videos. I am concerned about getting my car to hook in street trim. So ideas that I have right now are:
- Z06 springs
- Adjustable shocks
- Sway bars
- 18x10.5 width 5spoke wheels... needing some bigger tires than 295 though
- Also toying with keeping my stock rear 18s with a set of nittos when prowling
A friend of mine has a '99 TA 383 pushing 450rwhp and his car flat hooks and books. He's got tons of suspension work done with 315 rears. F-Bodies have many options out there to xfer weight to the rear wheels, aligning the suspension, etc. So how do I start to fix them in my C5? Will a DTE differential strut help keep the wheels planted? What about the "backbone" tunnel cover.. thing..?
Is the source of traction problems wheelspin, weight xfer, the transaxle flexing, etc?

LOL I can't believe I don't have any responses to this; this is a tech forum right? I tried to search first, but damn the luck that you can't pull up anything with search anymore.
No worries, though. I got my answers on "the other" vette forum. I just can't get the tech info I need from here like I used to. Oh well... I still can get other things.

Don't despair. I think the problem might be that the wheel hop issue has been discussed extensively on this forum. I too am still having that problem with my Mn6, and was hoping you would get some input as well I thought my hp increase might eliminate it, (currently 394rwhp) along with decreased pressure in my 295 Yokos, but it just didn't cut it. So, I will start with the tires and go from there. Be prepared for a abundance of varied opinions when and if it gets going. Good luck
When you reach a certain power level, you need drag tires plain and simple. I'm there now. No wheel hop, but vicious wheel spin that killing my 60' times and keeping me from running in the 11s where I should be.
My drag radials are now on order.
If you're having a weight transfer problem, drag shocks, especially in the front, will take care of it.
I used to get wheel hop. I have non-runflat Pilot Sports in Z06 sizes on Z06 chromies. Then I did a h/c and am getting 413rwhp 396rwtq through a set of 4:10's. Now my rears don't have time to hop. They just spinnnn. I put a set of HAL QA1's on, and lowered the car. That helped some because I could tailor the shocks to 'sort of' cancel out some of it. I also use a set of BFG DR's 295x35x18 mounted on 18x10.5 Z06 style chromies fro the track. They don't hop, but if I don't do a good burnout they spin too. I am about to install a DTE tranny girdle but that is to keep my tranny where Dave Hill likes it.
The major problem with wheel hop is that it is not an up/down oscillation but a front to back oscillation. The IRS we have isn't well suited for straight line accelerationand is better suited to the twisties. It would be great if someone made a strut that bolted to the frame and the wishbones to keep them aligned straight up for dragging. Maybe someone will someday.
I am going to try the Khumo V100 competition tires on the street. I have
never had a wheel hop problem at all. But I have a softly suspending coupe
with and automatic. I have 412 RWHP and a SS3600 converter and spin
way too easy so I too need more traction. The Viper guys rave about the
V100 on the Viper forum.
Tire rack .com has Pirelli Pzero corsa competition tires 18/30/315 on sale for 180 for the pair, add about 35 bucks for shipping. I am running these now and getting good traction but I am in a lightly moded A4 with a 3.15. Just thought I would let you know about these tires it is a pretty decent deal I run them on 18 x 10.5 chrome thinspokes.
I have a set of base FE1 sway bars if you want to use them Mark. Those in front with a set of HAL shocks should help alot. Seems you need to decide if you want a suspension to go strait or one to handle in corners. Not sure the "best" of both worlds exist.
