Default Replace stock cats?

Has anyone replaced just the stock cats? I don't want to replace the whole section since I'm cheap. Is it a worthwhile mod and how difficult is it? Also, how much can I expect to spend if I do it myself. I'm planning on removing the precats and opening up the holes in the H pipe, thought I might do this as well. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In general I know that catalytic converters don't rob too much of your power. I guess it depends on the manufacturer. I'd focus on the other exhaust components before upgrading the cats.

YOu can probably get 5-7 hp by losing the cats and replacing with Random tech hi flow cats....but they cost like over $500.00 a set...maybe you want to do some more work with them to make it count, like Longtube headers!!!

I didn't realize the cost was that high. One of the vendors sells the whole section (with X-pipe) for about 700. I guess I may be better off going that route. Gonna have to start saving my pennies. Thanks for the input.

Honestly, if you're even considering the $700 x-pipe and cats setup, do yourself a favor and save a bit longer for a set of LT headers like Kooks that can give you the whole package, cats and all. It's worth it.

Save a little more and go stainless like LG or Supermax. Mild Steel rusts like crazy and must be coated. Then you scratch the coating and it rust out.

What are your mods? Hi-flow cats aren't going to give you very much at all in terms of performance. Certainly not enough to justify $500. My 'hi-flow' cats were destroyed in under 2000 miles.. ProChargers and cats apparently don't get along .

Right now I don't have any mods. I just got my car about a month ago and I'm trying to get an idea of what I want to do. I don't have a spare 1500 for a full header system, just a couple hundred here and there to play with right now.

I'd start with an intake first, than do the exahust. I'd wait & do headers and cats/Xpipe at the same time. I found a great deal on used headers along with high flow cats & Xpipe. Take your time & plan your mods in advance. That way you will only spend the money once and not end up having to re-do them the right way the second time around. Ask me how I know that

Keep an eye on the C5 Parts For sale Forum. You might be able to pickup headers and Hi Flow cats at a very reasonable price.
