Default fuel filter question

I have a 2000 coupe and it is about time to change the fuel filter. I have owned the car since January 2004 and think I ought to replace the fuel filter.
1. Where is it located? I believe I found it on the driver's side rear but it looks like I may have to unbolt the exhaust right there to actually get my hands in there and get the filter out.

2. Can I got to Autozone ect. or do I have to purchase from dealer?

Thank you for your help.

Just did my fuel filter myself a while ago, Here is what I went off of, my vette is M6 so its just a little different step for you. Of course this credit goes to a fellow member info "FRPTech"

Replacing the fuel filter is a little messy, but, not terribly difficult...

You will need a fuel line disconnect tool and handy socket set...

- Relieve the pressure in the fuel line at the rail.
- Disconnect the battery
- Raise the drivers side rear of the car
- Since you have an A4 as I do, space it tight and it helps if you remove the catback portion of the exhaust on the drivers side.
- The filter is just up under the frame in front of the drivers side rear wheel
- Remove the bolt holding the filter assembly to the frame
- This is where it gets messy... Remove the two quick connect fittings towards the rear of the filter, just squeeze the blueish colored tabs and pull the two lines from the rear side of the filter. DO NOT be right under this - a couple of cups of gas will come pouring out - trust me I got soaked...
- Using the fuel-line disconnect tool, remove the line on the front side of the filter. This is tight, I was worried about snapping the line when I did mine but it will come out... Again, some gas will pour out and remember the filter itself is full.
You MUST use the fuel-line disconnect tool here. Its a little plastic ring with a cutout and tail that slide between the connector on the line and the hard tab on the filter. Same tool is used if you ever remove the line from the fuel rail...
- Clean up all of the fuel that went everywhere
- Put the new filter in place and bolt it down.
- Reconnect the lines.
- Reconnect the battery
- Turn the key in the ignition to pressurize the lines but do not start
Do this two or three times
- Check for leaks
- Replace the catback if you remove.
- Lower the rear of the car.
- Take it for a spin

Its not too bad, takes me about an hour and I take my time...

I didn't buy one. ONLY!!!! because my vette was sitting for 2 weeks in the garage and the fuel pressure. Well there was none since it has not been running.

I just used a long needle nose pliers.

Although would I do that again. NO!!! I almost broke the ring off. I asked all the places I went to and they looked clueless. Someone suggested just using a screw driver to relieve the fuel pressure.

I didn't ask NAPA, they might have it.
