Need quick answer about supercharger/engine setup. ASAP
I have the opportunity to purchase a Magnacharger from a very good forum member here. It appears to be in very good condition and is a pretty good price.
My question is I originally was going to just put the supercharger on and go from there. In the meantime, I have committed to buying a set ported and polished LS6 heads, a Comp 224-224/581-581/113, a ported LS6 intake, Shaner throttle body and 28.8 injectors from another very good forum member. (I'm also getting ready to buy a supermaxx header system.)
Now that this supercharger is available, I need to know if the bottom end of my '98 LS1 (40K miles) will hold up.
Will this setup work together. I want to call Magna this morning when they open but the seller just happens to be coming through my town today and if I could find out, it may save some extra work on everyone's part.
Any of the more experienced engine builders able to give me some advice/suggestions?
If you're going to race it, you will need to upgrade the lower end. Street driving with the standard boost and a good tune to keep down detonation it should be OK.
That setup should work fine together as stated above. The only thing I will add is that the Magna should come with bigger injectors so the 28.8's you have won't be needed.
I agree. H/C + MagnaCharger should get you in the 450-480 rwhp which is fine for a stock bottom-end provided you have a *good* tune. You will definitely need larger injectors to run 450+ rwhp.
Thanks. After much discussion right now it seems the right thing for me is to just do the supercharger... not only does it make it a little more "daily driveable" for me but from a financial standpoint, it gets into more than I want right now.
On top of the sc and installation prices (not including the heads or cam) I'll have to spend....
1400 add'l labor for installation
1400 for exhaust
500-700 for cam (assuming a new cam)
500 for injectors
That's almost 4K add'l not including the price of the heads and misc. incidentals... not to mention that with head/cam combo, it'll only net me an add'l 70-90 HP over the supercharger. At this moment, it's just not worth it.
Perhaps if the engine was coming out for a rebuild, it would justify going all the way but I really need to finish the blown bigblock in my S10 so I'd better spend my money wisely.
I really don't think you will "NET" 70 to 90 hp with THAT cam and head setup with the Maggie. The cam has too much overlap, you would need to go with a wider spread on the LSA to be optimum. LS-6 heads tend to a bit on the high side of the compression and if they are ported and polished...you should make sure they were not milled at all. That cam ahd head setup will probably make 70 to 90 hp if you don't use the blower in conjunction. Find out how much extra a cam install would be when the crank pulley is being pinned for the S/C setup, it maybe be worthwhile, but get a blower cam (blower cams have less overlap and exhaust duration tends to be longer than intake).

Thanks, I should have been more specific. The cam listed above was the cam I originally was going to go with before the supercharger came along... obviously I would have had to change over to a "blower" cam.
Also, the 70-90 HP was saying at best what I could expect in addition to the supercharger. (according to Magnuson using LPE's cam/head combo) (I'm also assuming that a set of ported and polished LS6 heads aren't as good as what LPE is selling)
I guess the point was that whether it was 50 or 100 extra HP from the h/c setup in addition to the sc, it's still not worth it for an add'l 4K.
